3.0 out of 5 stars Not Great - just alright March 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I first started reading this book, I found myself distracted a lot and needing to go back and catch up. This is an oddity for me because I love to read and can normally stay with the storyline. Towards the middle, I got into the book and thought it was an interesting story. The last of the book made me feel like I had whip-lash with all the twists and turns that the story was taking. It was exhausting and I found myself wishing it would just come to a conclusion - a real one and not another "surprise". The last chapter just confused me and then it irritated me.

I didn't think the book was bad but it definitely wasn't great. It won't be on my list of books to read again and I probably wont give the story much thought after this review. The twists and turns may appeal to many readers but for me, it was 1 or 2 too many.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "stay-up-till 2-AM-reading" kind of read March 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fake Kate starts like a romantic comedy, but underlying the light-hearted tone is an intriguing mystery.

Every character in this book might pop off the page and show up at the Internet Cafe at any moment. Even the secondary characters and fake Kate's eight dates. Every guy from every date seems completely real, from their Other Halves profile pages to their ultimate escape from Kate - each is unique, quirky, and has an agenda of his own.

Any book that keeps me up reading long after I should be in dreamland earns a 5-star review. I'd read to 91% of this novel on my Kindle by one in the morning, and there was no way I could go to sleep without finishing it.

The novel climax was a shock. I SO didn't see it coming that I had to page back and re-read it again. It was one of those, oh my god moments - when every possible scenario I'd come up with was absolutely, completely dead wrong.

The story resolution was a little bit "happily weird for now," - but hey, this is Kate we're talking about, so why not?

Don't miss this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book! February 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved "Fake Kate" from the very start. The author has an exceptionally strong voice that pulls you in and carries you along almost against your will. I loved the main characters very much and became quite fond of many minor characters too. Wailing has a real gift for dialogue and description, never bogging down in either, and he managed to construct a book with so many twists and turns of the plot that I was continually surprised. Just when I thought I knew where it was going, he pulled the rug out from under me. I was also impressed with Wailing's ability to write so convincingly from a female point of view. Additionally, he described the online dating scene perfectly--I laughed repeatedly in recognition of everything, from the barely literate descriptions (the "comma famine" line killed me) to the dates themselves.

So why only four stars instead of five? Well, technically I'd give this book 4.5 stars if I could. I loved, loved, loved it--right up until the last chapter, especially the last few paragraphs. I don't want to spoil the plot, so I won't go into details. I will say that I was confused by the ending--it seemed that a prior scene or two between the three characters who are in the very final scene was missing. I even re-read the last 15% of the book just to make sure I hadn't missed something. I simply could not figure out how to interpret the last chapter, especially those final paragraphs, because the main characters in that chapter seem too tentative and unsure (with regard to how they relate to Belinda) to support the tone of the final paragraphs. I finished the book feeling unbalanced. Were they truly that reconciled and at ease with each other? It didn't seem so, which made the very ending feel forced and unnatural--at least to me.

That said, I would still highly recommend this book. The rest of it is just about pin-perfect.

More About the Author

I was born in Nineteen Davidey-Dave (all the best people were born that year) and live in London. I write contemporary fiction, a blend of mystery, thriller and humour.

The key theme of all my novels is 'identity' - I am fascinated by people pretending to be something they're not. I bet you're doing that right now, with somebody. Go on, admit it. (I know I am. But that can be our secret.)

I have two novels available as paperback and Kindle ebooks: Fake Kate and Bang: Memoirs of a Relationship Assassin.

Relationship Status, Timeline, Friend Request, Backup and Copy are the first five stories in the Auto series, looking at what social media will be like in ten years time. Fifth Season is an end of the world story. All are available as Kindle ebooks.

I am currently writing new stories for the Auto series, which will be collected with new material into a full-length book in 2013.
