Something Old and Something New.,

This review is from: Fake Noise From a Box of Toys (Audio CD)
I'm so tired of reading nasty reviews on every Autumns album produced since In the Russet Gold of This Vain Hour. The band is evolving. Good bands do that.
Fake Noise From a Box of Toys is an excellent album. No, it is not In the Russet Gold of This Vain Hour. Nor should it be. It is classic Autumns with that evolution thrown in; a little different and new but still the same beautiful music that all true Autumns fans fell in love with when they first heard the band. They are not "brit-pop" or "alt". Matthew Kelly is not trying to put on a fake brit accent and just because Simon Raymonde produced In the Russet Gold of This Vain Hour does not mean they are trying to mimic Cocteau Twins. They are an American shoegaze band; a brilliant band. Do yourself a favor and buy Fake Noise From a Box of Toys. As soon as the first track punches you in the heart like Cupid's arrow, you won't regret it.

I own every Autumns full length album plus a few EP's and special editions. This is my least favorite of all of them. After steering away from a mainstream sound in an effort to be unique, this album seems like they are trying too hard.

A Mess,

The Autumns are a cross between Snow Patrol and My Chemical Romance. Unfortunately, their style doesn't match their songwriting talent. Oddly, everyone in the band is pretty good. But they fall short in making cohesive songs. Most songs are a jumbled mess with good pieces peeking out. What this band needs is a good producer to help them hone their craft. Until then, pass on the Autumns.
