At the other end of the spectrum from the mainstream nu-metal angst of
Limp Bizkit is the post-hardcore sextet Lost Prophets, who, on
The Fake Sound of Progress, frenetically prove that the fusion of disparate genres can, when done with passion, still sound like the most exciting thing on the planet. The group's debut is an accomplished work that ranks with those of much-lauded Yank peers
Glassjaw and
Incubus. Harnessing the thundering riffage and haywire DJ scratching so favored by the nu-metal front, they also mix in melodic new wave instincts. "And She Told Me to Leave" and the title track evoke everyone from
Fugazi to the
Police in a flurry of gunshot snare, fleet bass, and fiery feedback. It takes a brave group of Brits to take on the American nu-metal hierarchy, but this is the band to take up the challenge.
