5.0 out of 5 stars Great debut album
I was introduced to this band a couple years ago by a friend and I really liked thier heavy sound with Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja. So I bought this CD and was very impressed. 1.0 out of 5 stars One, maybe two good songs.
This is a pretty empty album. Beside the "Shinobi..." song, which really rocks out, I was very displeased by the remainder of the songs. The music felt stagnant, and really lacked direction. To be honest, I think these guys are just trying to sound like their contemporaries. They don't bring anything new to the table that we haven't heard elsewhere. If I...

Fav songs: Shinobi, Five is a four letter word, Kobrakai.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut, January 19, 2006
This album kicks ass, especially for a first album. Every song on the album is excellent quality, and each song showcase's everything that the prophets are about. Brilliant music, excellently sung. (and its not just in the studio, ian can pull out all the stops live as well). Buy this album before you buy their second record, Start Something!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than "Start Something", December 11, 2004
at least in my opinion it is. I, like most peaple who just heard of them, bought "Start Something" first and i liked that originally, so i decided to get their first cd. Most of the songs on "The Fake Sound of Progress" are harder than "Start Something" and it seems less radio friendly(which is a good thing in this case.) I first heard of this band a couple years ago when i saw the video for "Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja" but forgot about them until "Last Train Home," and even then it took me a while to make the connection between the two songs because the two cd's are so different(actually I made the connection when i went to download a song or two from "Start Something" to check it out before i bought it.) If you liked "Start Something" for songs like "Last Train Home" than you probably won't like "The Fake Sound of Progress." I like every song on this cd and whenever i get bored of listening to the radio(which is quite often) this is one of the cds i regularly put in the stereo.

As for similarities to other bands, I don't own any Incubus albums so i can't say they sound alike, and as for the Linkin Park similarity? A little bit in the music but not that much, really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lostprophets: The Fake Sound Of Progress, December 31, 2003
I first heard this band on MTV2 while channel surfing. I tuned in to their video of "Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja." All it took was one song, I became hooked. I got the cd, and from the first, in your face intro of Shinobi all the way to the end of Ode to summer, my jaw never left the floor. As a guitarist, you can really appreciate what this band has done. They are actually accomplished guitarists, rather than just pumping out the same damn dropped D power chords that have infected radio waves like the plague. Also you will be impressed to find that the bass and guitars work in harmony, rather then the bass mimicking the guitar. My favorite track ont he cd would have to be Kobrakai, although they are all extremely good. If you want a demo of just how diverse the prophets are, listen to Kobrakai. A heavy yet easy to love into leads to a very jazzy yet hard verse. The pre-chorus that follows is simply amazing, with phased notes being played over distored chords. Then all hell breaks loose as singer Ian Watkins begins to scream to crazed guitars. The screaming then breaks into an amazingly catchy yet hard chorus, which shows Watkins range as a singer. The song then quickly transforms back to the jazz. The most amazing part is that they do this all seamlessly. The Lostprophets are definatly one of the best things to happen to hard rock in quite some time. Although Kobrakai is my overall favorite, the Top tracks on the cd are Shinobi Vs. Dragon Ninja for its straight in your face rock, ...And she told me to leave for its AMAZING chorus bass/guitar harmonies and bad ass guitar riff in the chours, The Handsome Life Of Swing for its Dual overlapping Vocals, and Ode To Summer for its excellent guitar riff and outro. In closing, all I can say is pick up this cd if you appreciate real rock music, especially if you play an insturment. Challenge yourself and try to figure this stuff out... Its no easy task.

5.0 out of 5 stars These guys ain't lost man..., April 28, 2002
This is definately the best CD i have purchased in my 5 years of being interested in good music. The sheer brilliance of how everything blends together so well and fluently is the best part. In my opinion the best song on this album is arguably "Five is a four letter word" which has some amazing DJ-ing at the start and throughout the whole song. If you are lookin for a wicked CD that will keep you buzzing for months, buy this, NOW.

5.0 out of 5 stars like no other..., February 10, 2002
By A Customer
id have to say lostprophets sound nothing like Incubus-new skool or old,it just gets that tag cos Ian Watkins(vox) sings rather than screams. The music isnt nu metal it is more like emotional hardcore.a typical song off this album would be:a melodic guitar part with a bit of singing followed by a heavy part with more singing with the DJ adding a few backing shouts.Ive seen this band five times and like the title says theyre like no other.also if you can, try and get the original version of the album cos its heaps better than the new version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff., May 2, 2001

This review is from: Fake Sound of Progress (Audio CD)
If you're into Incubus, Faith No More, or just really good, intelligent hard music, check out this CD. This is incredibly excellent stuff. No filler; excellent production. I have absolutely no complaints w/ this UK band. This blows away all of the currently popular, horrible rap-metal (nu-metal) bands like Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, [insert name here]. Also, there's actual singing here instead of just yelling or rapping. Lost Prophets are a band that actually manage to incorporate hip-hop elements successfully yet still retain the integrity and sound of a "band".

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Start, February 18, 2002
I am goin to do a track by track review.
Shinobi Vs Dragon Ninja - 10 out of 10
This is a great song, the guitars and drums are perfectly linked with the lyrics.
Fake sound of Progress - 9 out of 10
The new single with a good video. Again the guitars and drums are good and the lyrics are stuffed with good lines.
Five is a four letter word - 9 out of 10
Another good song and by now you are thinkin wow wot a great band and rightly so.
And she told me to leave - 9 out of 10
ditto
Kobrakai - 6 out of 10
But then the album kicks itself in the backside. This song sounds very alike the last two, and now you are wondering if this is one of those albums which starts of well then the band feels the middle part with average tracks such as this one.
The Handsome life of swing - 4 out of 10
I do not mind a bit of screamin over the top of a song as long as the song has some emotion as well which this does not. I have forced myself to listen to this track over and over again to see if it grew on me but i just ended up hating it even more!
A Thousand Apologies - 5 out of 10
What is goin on where are the clever guitar and drums that were at the start of the album?
Still Laughing - 9 out 10
Very good lyrics, and he stops screaming. A slower song and you always get them on nu metal albums (Linkin Park + Limp Bizkit) and usally i am a fan its good to try something different and Lost Prophets pull it off.
For Sure - 8 out of 10
And now you know its one of those albums that start well and end well but the middle is pants.
Awkward - 7 out of 10
Very strange start but its a good song but the guitar does sound a lot like the one in Dragon Ninja.
Ode to Summer - 9 out of 10
Great song they should make it the next single after Fake sound of progress.

Overall it is a good album but the middle lets it down. This is the lost prophets first album and i cannot not wait till the second, which will not be out for a while cos they are touring everywhere! By the way when i said nu metal (Linkin Park + Limp Bizkit), some people may be affended cos Lost Prophets do sound different to Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit they have a um... mature sound. And yes i do like Limp Bizkit but do not let that put you off givin this review a helpful vote. Thanks
