This is a must get!,
By Carolyn "Dedicated Yaoi Fan." (NSW, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fake (DVD)
This is an Anime take off from Volume 2 of the famous Fake series. Who couldn't love Dee?! I had to buy it to add to my Yaoi Collection. Even though it's only Shonen Ai, the most that goes on is a kiss and a Dee's sudden want to strip Ryo down and boink him, though it doesn't happen thanks to Bikky and Carol's interference. It is a wonderful OVA Movie, though there are no extras and all, it is still worth buying.

Fake is one of the most interesting anime OAVs I've ever seen. Captivating until the very end, Fake will keep you on the edge of your seats.Fake is a story about a gay New York cop named Dee and his police partner Ryo. The pair has taken a trip to England for a little vacation time; yet what they do is anything but relaxing. A murder has been committed at their hotel, and it's up to Dee and Ryo, along with some wacky other characters, to slove the case. Fake is definitely recommended for any anime fan, novice or expert. Fake is thirteen and up for content, but there is nothing too bad. Fake is a good anime, even if you have never seen a shounen-ai (gay) anime before.

A romantic and fun vacation (murder included),

Fake was an extremely fun video to watch, with enough comedy and romance to leave you smiling, but also enough drama to give you a reality shock from time to time. Even if you've never watched yaoi or shonenai titles before, this one is enjoyable for its own sake. There's nothing really offensive, so as long as you can handle the kissing scenes (which are really sweet, btw) you'll be fine. The animation, admittedly, isn't top notch, but the main leads are good looking and you get used to it easily. I didn't expect too much when I first watched it, but I really found it better than people said. The actors who play Dee and Ryo are good and portray their characters well, so you can see them as real people--not stereotypes. The only regret I have is that the mystery wasn't half as interesting as the romance between Dee and Ryo--and there should have been more of it! But if you're looking for a way to pass some time, there's *definitely* worst things you could think of than watch "Fake." Besides, listening to all the Japanese-English is hilarious. Finally--how's this for a recommendation--I'm going to be ordering the manga from Japan after watching this video, and I don't even know Japanese. So if you like it half as much as I did, it'll be more than worth the money.

yaoi's best,

I have never before read a yaoi manga or watched a yaoi anime. But I have to say that I was really impressed with Fake. I was intrigued by the cover of the DVD and decided to chance it. Fake will now be a permanent memeber of my collection. Even if homosexuality is not your thing, Fake is worth a look. It treats shonen ai with care and a GREAT deal of humor. The art is fantastic and the voice casting is wonderful (the NA cast isn't bad either). Seki Tomokazu plays Dee. You'd remember his voice if you are a fan of Fushigi Yuugi (Chichiri/Kouji), X (Kamui), or Evangelion (Touji). Check this OVA out! It's worth the money.

Read the Books!,

I rented this movie with some others because sounded different than martial arts and robots. I didn't know there was such a thing as "yaoi". Admittedly, the story was kind of lame, but I really enjoyed the characters! They seemed well formed, as though they had been snatched out of the middle of a series, so I looked into FAKE and Anime Turnpike. As luck would have it, the first volume of the manga was just being released by Tokyo Pop!
I highly recommend the manga for this anime. The artwork far outshines the OAV, and the characters are wonderfully funny and real. The OAV really doesn't do Dee and Ryo justice (if fact they look a bit dispropotioned). Read the books! They'll become your favorite!

Desparate Love......(HeHe),

This review is from: Fake [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Being familiar with the Manga , it was most gratifying to finally view the sweetest and cutest duo in action.... whilst successfully capturing all the vitality and humour that makes the Manga so compelling and endearing. Dee's obsessive and lusty antics in trying to seduce the deeply sensitive Ryo is often hilarious to watch....and the chemistry between the two.......YUM! Well animated and grateful to add, well translated...Fake delivers on all fronts. New initiates to the story will be able to pick it up straight away.Though by no means hardcore yaoi and being only repellent I guess to homophobics, it's most satisfying to start seeing more Shounen-Ai based animes being available mainstream......I for one can't wait for the next one ......Seriously CUTE !!

Superb gay anime.,

FAKE is a stunning project. The movie presented is actually a bit of a compression of the SECOND issue of a manga (Japanese comic) of the same title. Although the movie attempts to show all pertinant background information of the characters involved, it leaves out some details. In all, however, it is an excellent movie, and quite a daring import, given the american attitude about homosexuality.

My first Shounen-ai (a landmark, yes),
By Jessica (Lawrence, MA) - See all my reviews

For anyone unfamiliar with the term, "shounen-ai" means "Boy's love", a term for a genre of anime depicting male/male romance. If this doesn't bother you, then you'll love this video. Although I've seen this listed as a "Mystery" (!), I would definetly consider it a comedy/romance. The mystery isn't all that mysterious (although for a bit you have your doubts), and the comedy relief comes mainly from the unresolved sexual tensions between the characters of Ryo and Dee (who are absolute dolls and voiced by fantastic seiyuu). I give this video four stars instead of five because first off, I felt it could have been a little longer and dealt a little more with the plot (at an hour, it's a decent length for an OVA). Secondly, I would have loved to get some closure on the Dee/Ryo relationship, and that ending scene - especially the very last image - makes me very, very curious as to what happens next. And of course, I would have liked to see Ryo and Dee get a little more "friendly", eh? (Sorry, obsessed shounen-ai fan talking). However, the video is a fun and light bit of fluff to pass the time with, and it is hilarious and quite sweet in parts. And you have to love that music.

Two Gay New York Cops on Vacation,
By Nangke (Cali, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fake [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Ah, a sweet romantic animated feature about a pair of New York's Finest (oh so FINE), Dee Laytner and Randy "Ryo" McClaine on vacation in England. You get used to the character designs VERY quickly -- main cast members are very lean and ectomorphic, but lovely. The English-dubbed voices are expressive and fit the personalities so well that you have to wonder why this anime hit Japan first rather than the U.S. And the dynamic between Dee and Ryo! I sympathized with Dee right from the start, wearing his heart on his sleeve and chasing after Ryo, but Ryo's so hard to hate even for being so demure. They both have their own unique charm; I'd love to see these two together one day. Too bad they have so many things getting in the way. Rivals for both Dee and Ryo within their precinct, a pair of precocious children, and a murder case (that puts one member of my favorite pair into direct danger, oh no!) falls into their laps even though they're supposed to be on vacation! Buying this title is highly recommended. Buy it, buy it!

Fun and hilarious,

This is great from the opening sequence featuring all the manga characters to the end scene. Not to give too much of the plot away, but our two heroes, Dee and Ryo, are on a romantic getaway in England (and Ryo claims he doesn't know how he feels about Dee!), but the interruptions just pile one on another in hilarious fashion. It has a terrific soundtrack, with lots of saxophone, beautiful animation, and terrific voice actors. It's based off the second manga, but you really don't need to know anything about the manga to love the OAV. |
