4.0 out of 5 stars The giants of the samba revival, December 31, 2009
This review is from: Fala Mangueira [Odeon 100 Anos] (Audio CD)
Various Artists
"Fala Mangueira!"
(EMI-Odeon, 1968)
--------------------------------------
A lovely record documenting a late-1960s samba supergroup drawn from the Mangueira samba school. Included are the escola's founder, Cartola, as well as Clementina De Jesus and Nelson Cavaquinho, Odette Amaral and Carlos Cachaca, all guiding lights of the pre-pagode samba revival of the 1960s. Although I've seen this listed as a "various artists" album, that's not entirely correct -- the artists are all working together in an ensemble; it might be more accurate to say this is a record by a band named Fala Mangueira. At any rate, it's a great historical document -- anyone interested in digging deep into Brazilian roots samba will want to check this out. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Brazilian Music)
