I'm not a huge Naruto fan - the few episodes I've seen on tv seemed like Dragonballz to me (lots of posturing/talking, and then a little bit of awesome fighting). But, I could tell it wasn't all bad.

I bought this just because it was a good value - 27 volumes for $115. And, having read the 1st volume, I think I'll like the manga more than the anime (which i'm not writing off yet).

The wooden box comes in a black corrugated cardboard box - nicely designed. For some reason, only the inner box is covered in plastic wrap (the top cardboard lid isn't). The art and look was very well done.

The box was not very well packaged by Amazon and one corner of the box was slightly dinged. I'm not really a collector so it's not a big deal to me, but if you're interested in that, be aware that it may be damaged in transit... like mine was.

When I unwrapped the plastic, and tried to lift up the wooden box inside... the whole back panel came off. Which I found kind of funny. Looking at it, I could see that a little bit of glue and some very tiny staples had been used to hold it together and they must have gotten loose during shipment (all that manga is pretty heavy and the lack of back padding didn't help, I'm sure). I used some wood glue and 1/2" brads to reattach the back panel and better than new! ;) But, the problems don't end there. The inside of the wood box wasn't sanded very well and it is quite rough at parts. I'm sure if you slide the manga in/out, the abrasiveness will damage the covers. Also, the plexiglass front panels slide out to the right and are supposed to be kept in place by magnets embedded into the frame. But the alignment is poor and in mine, the magnets were embedded so far into the wood frame, that even if they aligned, they don't work. The finish is badly applied, uneven and some areas were missing the stain completely. Just a pretty shoddy box altogether and probably cost about $5 to make. Don't get this set thinking you will get a nice sturdy case! There is a nice sticker on the back saying, "#xxx of 5000" (mine is 843 which was handwritten).

I did not open all the extras like the card, or poster as they aren't that important to me. I left those shrinkwrapped. Volumes 18, 21, 24 and 27 are also shrinkwrapped as they contain the "exclusive collectible stickers."

So, if you're going to get this as a "collector's item," I think you may be a little disappointed. If you're going to get it just as a good overall value, it's very nice.

Maybe I'm being a little too harsh about the wooden case. If you look at it from far away, the plexiglass, with the graphics don't look too bad.

And if you are at all interested in Naruto, but haven't made any purchases of the manga, this is definitely the way to go. Consider the box and extras as that - bonuses.

I have read all of the reviews about this item. I am buying this for my niece, Taylor, for Xmas. I told her from what I read that it might come in pieces but she said she didn't care, so I got it for her. Well when it arrived I was shocked that it was in perfect condition!

Compared to the review's the Harry Potter boxed set got for it's cheap cardboard case, I was pleasantly surprised by the nice quality wood shelf set with the sliding doors. Contrary to another reviewer, I like the sliding doors. They're much better than a hinge that could break. My son is thrilled to own a whole set of Naruto books, and even more thrilled with the case to hold them. He loves to show it off. A great value for the price!
