Excellent Book for Understanding Afghanistan,

This review is from: The Fall of Afghanistan: An Insider's Account (Hardcover)
This is the best book on the history of Afghanistan for the 100 or so years before the Communist coup that led to thirty years of war and destroyed a beautiful country. Abdul Samad was an eyewitness to much of that history, serving as a top-level diplomatic advisor to both Afghanistan's last king and the doomed Doud government. If you want to understand the dynamics between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Soviet Union, and Russia as well as much of the internal struggle to forge a modern Islamic state, then you need to read this book.
