Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6–9—This second book in a series about a teen who lacks self-confidence but matures through jobs at The Holiday Zone amusement park has a premise that's hard to buy and a weak mystery. Candy tries out for the park's Halloween "Scare." Improbably, she ends up playing herself in a re-enactment of an urban legend in which a psycho killer chases her around the park. She does well until she's hurt when someone booby traps her performance space. Other employee areas are targeted, prompting rumors of a ghost. After her mysterious run-in, Candy is reassigned to the candy-corn cart and organizes the park's "Sugar Shock," where children collect candy on Halloween. She makes the event a success and helps catch the saboteurs. These experiences allow her to stand up to a less-than-supportive guidance counselor. The real star of this novel is the Holiday Zone with its many imaginative areas. A scene with marauding pirates is its most memorable. All in all, this title is not the best choice for most collections.—Tina Zubak, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA

Join Candace Thompson on a sweet, lighthearted, and honest romp through the friendships, romances, family, school, faith, and values that make a girl's life as full as it can be.Will Candace survive the shift from cotton candy to candy corn?Fall is in the air, and without completely knowing why, Candace Thompson has signed up to continue what was supposed to be a short-term summer job at the local theme park. Working with Kurt doesn't hurt, but a surprising kink involving her youth group, as well as the shock of an unexpected setback, threaten to be more painful. Candace's autumn holds as many surprises as her summer as her rousing romp through the seasons continues.

4.0 out of 5 stars 2nd in Sweet Seasons series lots of good fun, October 27, 2008
The Fall of Candy Corn by Debbie Viguie is the second in the Sweet Seasons series starring Candace Thompson. Candy is still working at The Zone, the local amusement park, but this time as herself in a haunted maze. She hates the attention that keeps coming her way and is worried about her future plans for college. This YA chick-lit title is a little bit Nancy Drew, a little bit Scooby-Doo (including the line: we would have gotten away with it if not for you kids!), and a whole lot of fun! Candy is your very typical teenager, trying to have fun, hang with friends, and not think too hard about tomorrow. Vigiue captures the essence of adolescence with its flits of maturity as well as stretches of complete self-absorption. But Candy is charming, someone you want your son to bring home and your daughter to befriend. The Zone is a great backdrop filled with fascinating characters. Bring this one home for you and your daughter!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Fall Job Ever, October 26, 2008
This book was even better than the first one in the series. I really liked how Candace has really changed from the first book. She now is one of the regulars and she fits in with almost everyone. She's grown up quite a bit as she's more willing to help out others. She even gives up her free time to plan the dreaded Sugar Shock event and recruits others to join her. It's quite a nice change from the indecisive snobby girl from the first book. Her relationship with Kurt is growing also in this book. While he's a nice guy, I personally prefer Josh myself. I'm hoping that somehow him and Candace might end up together. Tamara is a much better character in this story. I was pleased to see her generosity put to good use in regards to the youth group's trip. This story really made me want The Zone to exist in real life. It would be so awesome to go visit and scare myself silly throughout the park. There's some scary events that take place in the park which would have freaked me out but Candace takes them in stride. Her job is way cool and I totally envy her. This book is a fun, quick, hip read that teens will love. I am dying to read the next book in the series. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite YA series ever.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Fall of Candy Corn, December 12, 2010
The Fall of Candy Corn is the second in the Sweet Season Series. Candace Thompson is a typical teenage girl who likes to have fun, hang out with friends, and not to worry about tomorrow. She continues her summer job at a local theme park which was only suppose to be a short-term summer job. It's Halloween time at the Zone and Candace's job is working as a maze monster and she is a little embarrassed of it. Candace hates the attention that keeps coming her way and is worried about her future college plans. I would recommend this book to mostly girls who love a series book. It has lots of interesting characters in this book and lots of mysteries to figure out. This book is great for you to get into the time of season it is. It's the perfect book to read around this time of year.
