Europe, 1848: three imperial dynasties rule over territories stretching from Germany south to the Adriatic Sea and east to the Bering Strait on the Pacific Coast. The Houses of Hapbburg, Hohenzollern, and Romanov ruled over lands more vast than the British Empire at its greatest extent. In their struggle for continental domination and for eternal guarantees for their rule by divine right, they nurture the weeds of reaction that are destined to choke European democracy and become part of the conflagration of 1914.

World-renowned diplomatic correspondent and historial C. L. Sulzberger traces the rise and fall of the three dynasties from their emergence as feudal princelings to their coronation as absolute imperial lords, wielding vain, often foolish, often cruel, reactionary sovereignty over a degraded peasant population.

THE FALL OF EAGLES captures the Gotterdammerung of European imperial power and, while dramatizing the human spectacle of its dynasts, provides a sharp and profound understanding of the causes that led to the awesome tragedy of World War I.

If you're interested about the European Empires and Emperors during the past two centuries this is a book for you, however, you better have a dictionary with you because the author uses words not so common in usage. Get the book then watch the TV series. Enjoy!

I first saw the TV series with the same name. I was so entertained by it I felt obliged to get the book when I learned of its existence. A couple of chapters in now and it is very enjoyable and filled with even greater detail than the TV series.
