I'm really enjoying this glimpse into the Kilcher family's 600+ acre homestead and their self sufficient lifestyle in the Alaskan wilderness. Very interesting how they originally came to be there. Eighty years ago the first Kilcher fled war-torn Europe with his wife to establish an independent life in America, and their descendants are carrying on that tradition. Farming in Virginia is tough enough for our family, but nothing compared to the Kilcher's daily struggle to survive. I'm cheering them on, especially through those interminable winters. I'm as far north as I care to be in the Shenandoah Valley.

The Kilchers seem like a very honest, intriguing and down-to-earth family. I can't wait for season 2. I hope there is more about Eve's garden. I would love to see how she does it. Also, I hope to see a trip to town, with dialogue about how often they go to town and for what purposes. I'm also ready for them to publish a recipe book. Some of those meals they show look delicious.

Even with the contradictions, I'm a huge fan. Eivan says he has no running water, yet he and Eve are washing a plucked chicken under a spigot of running water. He says he has no electricity, but I see solar panels on the side of his house and a power meter on the side of Atz Lee's house.

Love the show!

This show takes you back to a time when we wanted and needed family, and worked for our own survival, not for material value. An honest living, true happiness and satisfaction. Making it through life's struggles together ... and in such a savage and beautiful place ! There is still a little bit of it left in all of us !

I loved the show. I understand that it was made for tv, but sometimes they repeat scenes so many times it becomes awful. Its like after, break the break, now, earlier, again earlier before the break. I swear you can see the same scenes 5 or 6 times an episode. I wish they would add an educational piece like they do in survivor man. Like the tip to make the feather come out easier when plucking a turkey. A little more of that would be great.

I wasn't enthralled by the first episode but decided to watch the second anyways. Wow, I was quickly roped in by the difficult life that this family has. I've watched every episode and can't wait for more. The episode where they take the barge up the river is just too much to comprehend. This family accomplishes more in one summer than most do in a decade.

A reality show that is not overly dramatized. I enjoy seeing how the Kilcher Family live a subsistence life in Alaska. Their hard work by family and friends to be self reliant is a good example to everyone.

I'm living off the land, sort of, and these episodes often speak to my condition. Only downside is the insidious, often repeated recaps. I think they do it to make a 20 minute program into a 45 minute one, but they would be much better off without. Recaps seem to be a reality show pattern that someone without a lot of creative forethought used as a "clever" way to fill time then all the rest bought into it. A recap at the beginning of the show is fine, but not over and over again. This could be a solid four stars without the recaps.

I kinda sorta want to be one of these guys. Not! (couldn't live in the freezing weather for 9 months out of the year! or not have a regular washing machine to wash my underwear regularly!) :) But, I sure enjoy watching them!! I will happily live vicariously through them. They do somehow inspire me. :)
