I haven't had a record grab me like this for ages...from the opening burst of 'I Told A Lie', Rusty Willoughby leads his late band through a rockin', flawless collection of truly superior tunes. I have a feeling this CD will be in my changer for a looooong time. Rusty, you're my rock and roll hero!

3 terrific albums, kicking it off with this, the best one. Everything works here -- fat hooks AND riffs, tremendous playing (especially from the lead guitarist, Bill Campbell), darkly-comic lyrics from Rusty Willoughby, and great variety in the song arrangements. All in all, this is a great team effort by a band that must have been disappointed to see its genius go so unrecognized. Check out the other 2 too -- Whenever You're Ready is especially worthwhile.

I really love Flop, especially their middle cd, Whenever You're Ready. This, their first CD, is nearly as much fun. Their last CD for me was tighter, but lacked the melodies and goofy lyrics that really make the first two so great.

What's cool about Flop? First off, you've got a band that practices pop with harmonies like the Monkeys from the 60's tv show, but you've also got an extremely quirky garage band with a raw sound and a willingness to try just about anything. You get cool melodies with very odd lyrics; and even if you don't really know what the songs are about, there are some very cool lines. "Mom used to make her head explode, I never thought to ask her why. And daddy used to make her cry, so it goes." "Threw a stone into the bottomless sea, and tied to it was the hope that you're coming back to me." "Fear and shame hold hands and hide the form of a real solution." "Bold slashing maggot teeth, powerful and treelike limbs of allosaur go by." Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the song titles have no relation to anything in the song, but it's always great power pop with all the rough edges left unpolished, and always lyrically fascinating. You won't be bored.

Pure Joy, Willoughby's previous band, was also good garage pop, albeit not as wonderfully wierd as Flop. I like both.

Led by charismatic, tempestuous frontman Rusty Willoughby (formerly of Pure Joy), Flop delivers the power pop goods on this trusty LP.

Even though they were probably signed in the "next Nirvana boom" this album is fanatastic. Spend the two bucks and be rewarded!
