Book Description

President Obama presided over one of the worst financial crises and slowest economic recoveries to ever hit the United States. Unemployment was higher at the start of his second term than it was on the day he first took office. He faced gridlock and stymied at every turn. So facing all of this, how could Mitt Romney possibly lose the 2012 election? It had nothing to do with economics or politics and everything to do with a Republican Party that refuses to adapt to the changing demographic and political landscape.

The Fall of the Republican Party details how the GOP is quickly slipping from prominence and seems to be splitting at the seams; one side clinging to the policies of the last 12 years and the other trying hard to change and adapt to what America has become - as uncomfortable for some as it may be.

Will the party reform itself? Will it split apart? No matter what the outcome there is certainly a significant change afoot in the American political landscape. A change that will have major repercussions for years to come.

I was intrigued by the premise of the book, and found it timely given the dramatic events surrounding the election of 2012. At forty pages, it's more like a long form magazine or journal article than a book, but the format works given the author's fast-moving pace.

For those who are not as well versed in recent political party history, there is a helpful overview of the events and dynamics leading up to the election of 2012. The author included many of the most important trends and shaping forces of the 2012 cycle, though I noted a few that I thought were lightly covered.

As other reviewers have noted, the author approaches the topic with a distinct point of view, as evidenced by the commentary interwoven with the historical reporting and political analysis. This can be good or bad, depending on your perspective. It may diminish your enjoyment if you are more interested in objective analysis and speculation, but if you share some (or all) of the author's assumptions and ideals then it may be helpful in persuading you of the author's argument.

It is a fascinating topic and the author expands the conversation by offering a timely and cogent argument for one possible outcome of the current turmoil in a very divided GOP. Recommended both for political geeks and the more casual reader trying to better understand this new era of party politics.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good analysis, but biased February 4, 2013

This is a well-written book, and the author supports his contentions well. Be aware that it is not an unbiased presentation. The author has an agenda, a viewpoint, a goal, and he pursues it. But he does a good job of it, and he may well convince you he is right. Maybe he is. But there are other views, so read it skeptically. But read it. It's worthwhile, whether you believe it or not.
