Editorial Reviews

Review

Richard Renaldi's Fall River Boys provides a somber view of American masculinity in a series of portraits of the young residents of a fading mill town in Massachusetts. August Sander is the model here, but Renaldi's black and white photographs are not just carefully observed, they're soulful, and tempered with brotherly respect for their subjects. --Vince Aletti - Photograph

Renaldi is a visionary. He captured something no one else has. He's captured these characters just at the brink, no longer boys, but not quite men. --The Boston Globe - June 14, 2009

Charles Lane Press's guiding ideal is that gorgeously printed books are the ultimate expression of a photographer's vision. With its beautiful production, Fall River Boys is a first step well taken. - Photo District News --Photo District News --Photo District News

Let me start by saying that I do not collect photography books. In fact, I own only a few. But there is something about Richard Renaldi's "Fall River Boys" that made this a must-have for me.

Renaldi's book is comprised of a collection of beautiful black and white portraits and landscapes, shot over several years in the economically depressed town of Fall River, MA. From the first few pages, it's clear that Renaldi approaches his subjects with respect and consideration. There is nothing sensational or exploitative about these photographs. Nothing invasive or over-produced. Rather, these are genuine, unfiltered, and often arresting images of people and places that many of us never see, and rarely consider.

According to the book's prologue, Renaldi uses an 8x10 box camera, and it definitely shows. These large-format cameras allow for both a sweeping composition and a sense of intimacy. (From what I understand, it can take 5-10 minutes to set up and take a shot, during which time, I presume, the subject develops a relationship with the camera -- a relationship that we as the viewer are then invited to witness.) Most of the subjects are shot from head to toe, standing or sitting in the places they call home. In this way, we are given a glimpse into the lives of people who have clearly seen their fair share of struggle and hard times. But when they gaze back at us, it is with pride and dignity, and no one here seems to be out looking for sympathy. Nor does Renaldi try to elicit it. Instead, his shots stand and speak for themselves, in all their beauty and tragedy, disappointment and hope.

One last thing about this book: in the world of the ubiquitous, cheap, commercial photography books one often finds in stores, the high quality of "Fall River Boys" really stands out. The paper, the cover, the printing -- it's among the best I've seen.
