Book Description

December 14, 2009
Critically acclaimed by Urs Heinz Aerni (Journalist and Agent for Art & Culture), "Fallacy 2012 is a must read"..."highly informative and thrilling page turner". Fallacy 2012 is a gripping story that weaves current theories about evolution and transformation into the lives of its characters. The wafer-thin distinction between fiction and reality is one of the main sources of intrigue in the novel. The author subtly weaves the inspiring destinies of her two characters into a broader canvas of current political and social affairs. She gives readers intimate insight into the emotions of a deeply traumatized woman and with great empathy charts Sophia's path toward inner peace and equilibrium. 49-year-old Sophia's life is in tatters. Saved at the eleventh hour from a tragic judicial error, she embarks on the long process of rebuilding her life. While recuperating on a tiny island northeast of Sicily, she meets Nathan, a scientist who feels it is his life's calling to communicate the prophecies of the ancient Maya to a wider public. Nathan knows he must do everything in his power to refute the apocalyptic scenarios the doom-mongers predict for 2012 without trivializing the real risks. Sophia agrees to accompany him on this challenging journey. Will this dyed-in-the-wool skeptic and devoted biologist manage to enlighten humanity about the mysteries of 2012 in time?

About the Author

Swiss author Monica Camuglia's goal is to instill in her readers a profound awareness of their own personal responsibility for a peaceful and balanced life. "I have always been fascinated by life stories and the playing out of individual destinies," she says, "but I began writing in earnest around four years ago after a crisis in my personal life. In some ways it was therapeutic, but it also opened doors to new understanding of life's challenges." Over a twenty-year professional career in teaching and business, Monica struggled to find balance and happiness in her life. At the peak of her success she decided to step away and focus on her inner wellbeing and her relationship with humanity. It was a journey that would lead her to explore psychology, philosophy and spirituality, and to discover a path she realized she had been traveling all her life: that of the writer. She recently published her first book, Fallacy 2012, a gripping story in which she weaves current theories about evolution and transformation into the lives of her characters. Her upcoming novels include Maria Magdalena, a love story between an American officer posted in Afghanistan and a sensitive, spiritual woman and explores the concept of a just war; Jam, which follows the life of a tormented woman who becomes increasingly obsessed with protecting her daughter from her ex-husband; and The Tooth, the story of a woman who struggles to overcome profound depression caused by the loss of a loved one and her own identity. Monica speaks four languages and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from the Graduate School of Business Administration Horgen, in Switzerland. She lives with her daughter near the shores of Lake Zurich.

I've read a lot of Paulo Coehlo and appreciate anyone who can take me into a parallel world, explore ideas of present interest. I read the novel in the series of publishing reviews for the English edition. Enjoyed it. Throw it your beach bag when you a break from reading Stieg Larson or Dan Brown mega-novels. A good read.

Although the book is entitled 2012, don't expect it to accompany the Hollywood disaster movie 2012 in any way. What you get however is a little gem. Summarised, Camuglia's book is an intellectual look at the 2012 end of the world issue, wrapped-up in a story about a single mother, Sophia, trying to raise her young daughter, whilst the father is trying to take her away.

For me the book has the same qualities which make Dan Brown novels so popular - interesting facts sprinkled into a capturing storyline.

All-in-all I found this book to be a pleasant read, from which I learnt about the subject 2012 (which, incidentally I did take on holiday and read on the beach!).

Also I take my hat off to Richard Hall for the translation.

Is life what we make it? August 4, 2010

A perfect summer read ... a page-turner with some crime and sex, it is an ironic take on the Mayan Calendar and "the end of the world" - relentlessly hyped in the run-up to Roland Emmerich's blockbuster "2012". Single mom Sophia, the novel's heroine, is initially painfully insecure about herself and struggles throughout to find the harmony and serenity her name promises ("sophia" means wisdom in ancient Greek). She sees through the media-driven 2012 "fallacy" (the apocalypse scenario) and chooses to believe in Nathan, the male protagnist's, hypothesis that 2012 will mark the beginning of a radical yet incremental shift in cosmic energy that will revolutionise human priorities.

Camuglia makes skillful use of flashbacks in the early part of her book to inform readers about previous "chapters" of Sophia's life, including her fraught marriage and attempt on her husband's life. I look forward to Camuglia's next creation!
