5.0 out of 5 stars This series keeps getting better!, November 17, 2003
This review is from: The Fallen: Aerie (Mass Market Paperback)
I love the fallen series and was waiting with great excitement for the third book to come out. I got the book on October 31 and finished it the same night.

As Aaron grows to understand his powers, the story expands with him. The book follows Aaron, Gabriel, and Camael to Aerie, sanctuary and safe haven for the fallen angels as well as some Nephilim that survived the wrath of the Powers. As Aaron struggles to maintain his humanity while learning about his angelic heritage, we learn about what really happened in the War at Heaven's Gates from the source that started it all as the identity of Verchiel's prisoner is finally reviled. We also learn that Aaron's father is... ^_^ Didn't think I was actually going to spoil it, did you?

My friends and I have all followed the Fallen series closely and I speak for all of us when I say that we are waiting for Reckoning with great anticipation.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Fallen, October 31, 2010

This review is from: The Fallen: Aerie (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is part of a series about fallen angels, and nephilim (children of angels and humans). The first few books were great, although it got a bit tedious toward the end of the series. Still worth a look. Doesn't preach any religion, but is almost like a supernatural series where all of the beings are a "given". Written for a younger crowd (like the Twilight series and Harry Potter) but still good reading for adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3rd Book And It Keeps Getting Better, Who Would Have Though It?, December 19, 2009
This review is from: The Fallen: Aerie (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is just plain out awesome. I know through my personal experience with series of books, though not majorly extensive, the books in the later part of the series tend to dwindle down and start to loose some of the original interest. This book however is far from that notion. This book just kept up the interesting nature of the first two and succeeded what i could have imagined. I was majorly impressed at how the book turned out. The action scenes that were in this book just made my mind race in descriptive value. I pictured the surroundings and the characters as if i were standing right there next to them. The back story made it's way out again as in the second book and you learn more about Aaron and his life, legacy, and purpose. You can feel the tension while your reading through the book. It keeps you on the edge of your seat reading and wondering what was going to happen next. For Thomas E Sniegoski to keep me as the reader in suck an awestruck state and keep me drawn in as he did is just amazing. He kept me interest well after i put the book down. It made me want to pick up the next book right away and get started on it so i could find out more and keep the great story going. After you read this book you'll be ready to pick up the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3rd in this excellent series, July 26, 2007

This review is from: The Fallen: Aerie (Mass Market Paperback)
Aerie is a safe haven for fallen angels. It is a place that Camael has sought, but until now has never found. Aaron, the Nephilim who is the one foretold by a Prophecy - the one who will be the one to forgive the angels who transgressed against God and be able to forgive those who truly repent and send them back 'home' - to Heaven - Aaron, Gabriel, his Lab, and Camael, find Aerie, and the folks in Aerie are skeptical about Aaron. They see that he is a strong Nephilim, but...
Aaron begins tutoring by some of the elders in Aerie, but feels his girlfriend, is in danger - she is captured by Vercheil and used as bait to bring Aaron to the Powers so they can kill him - their killing machine Malek, is Aaron's foster brother, whom Vercheil transformed to do his bidding...
Aaron proves who he is, and he also finds out who his father is. It has always been an easy 'educated guess' for us readers. A side story of one of Vercheil's prisoners, a man who is truly repentant for his sins, who verbally spars with Vercheil, also brings light to this mystery.
This is an excellent book and the series is amazing.
The Fallen, Leviathan, Aerie and Reckoning make a formidable series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Haven't I Read This Before?, September 20, 2011
This review is from: The Fallen: Aerie (Mass Market Paperback)
About the Book:
In the third installment of The Fallen series, Aaron continues his journey to find his step-brother, Stevie. Along this journey, Aaron and his companions end up at Aerie, a safe haven for nephilim and the fallen. Meanwhile, Verchiel, the Powers' commander, is still determined to put an end to Aaron by any means.

Review:
I, honestly, felt that Aerie had a bit of a rough start as it was more character based, which is not Sniegoski's string suit. However, once the action started picking up again, it was a faster and more enjoyable read. It was well detailed without being overtly so. I did feel. however, that a good chunk of the book was recycled, in several areas, in fact. Although the action scenes were interesting, it seemed as if they had been written in his The Fallen novel. Now, I understand that things are bound to be repeated at some point in a series, but when you feel that way throughout most of the book, you have a problem. Also, the action scenes were not the only repetitive thing produced. Again, we have Verchiel threatening people Aaron cares for. Again, we have fallen angel deaths and forgiveness. Again, there is a fight with Verchiel. And again there is lightning used as a weapon. Hell, we are even getting the same jokes. I like Gabriel, but the hunger and food jokes have gone stale.

Again, this is another plot driven book, which is fine and dandy, but can make it hard for the reader to care for the characters. However, even with this fault, I, personally, felt a sadness when Aaron comes across Stevie and realises what has been done to him. Yes, a well written emotional level could have brought out more, but I believe anyone with a little imagination could draw up a cord deep within.

Overall, however, I enjoyed the book and felt it was worth both my times and money. Yes, it seemed recycled and the dialogue had me rolling my eyes, but I was able to fall into it. It kept me up at night since I did not want to put the book down, and I think that speaks for itself.

The saga continues with Aaron, Camael and Gabriel still searching for Stevie. By pure accident they stumble upon folks who are from Aerie . . . a place where the Fallen and Nephilim live together to avoid the Powers.
Verchiel is still in hot pursuit of Aaron and send his magical warrior . . . Malak to hunt for Aaron's scent. Malak wears armor the color of blood that is impervious to angel fire. He also possesses the keen ability to pick up the scent or trail of the Fallen and Nephilim . . . then he mercilessly kills them. He is determined to prove his worth and find the chosen ONE for his master . . . Verchiel.
Aaron must prove himself to the citizens of Aerie . . . that he IS indeed the chosen ONE . . . a hard enough task, when he is unsure himself. An ancient and wise gentle Fallen angel . . . Belphegor helps Aaron to unite his human and angelic natures.
While in the process of becoming whole Aaron hears Vilma's pleas for help . . . he instinctively goes to her rescue, not realizing that it could be a trap. Despite overwhelming odds, he must battle Verchiel and the Powers to save Vilma. He meets the warrior Malak and realizes that it is his little brother Stevie who has been changed somehow, he cannot bring himself to kill his own brother . . .
He rescues Vilma and takes her back to Aerie . . . but the battle follows him, he loses many friends and loved ones . . .
Verchiel learns from Belphegor who Aaron was sired by . . . during the battle he taunts Aaron with jibes about his father . . . enraged Aaron demands that Verchiel reveal his father's identity . . .
Aaron learns who his father is from his friends at Aerie and is stunned by the news . . .
NOTE:
If you're a deeply religious person you may find these novels offensive to your tastes, especially in regards as to how the author chooses to portray Lucifer.
But if you have an open mind, perhaps you can just simply enjoy these books for the fiction that they are. I found the series of books to be wonderfully written and richly portrayed.
I did see the ABC movie that was based on these books, but the movie did not follow the books exactly and left a lot out. Also the movie chose to portray Lucifer as the evil angel outlined in many current religious works.

I guess I am that person on the boards who just discovered what everyone else has already seen and talked about a long time ago and moved on.

I discovered Thomas Sniegoski when I bought one of those anthology books because Charlaine Harris and Jim Butcher were in it. The only other author who impressed me in that book was Sniegoski. I loved his style. In fact, it sounded familiar to me... so, look through Google and Amazon search, and I found out why. Buffy, Hellboy ... I've been a fan of Sniegoski for a long time!!

The Remy Chandler series and now this series have completely charmed me!
Dancing on the Head of a Pin: A Remy Chandler Novel
A Kiss Before the Apocalypse: A Remy Chandler Novel
The Fallen

The Fallen series is clearly pitched at a young adult audience. No problem. I can enjoy that, even though it's been a while since I was a young adult!

This series has lots of heart, and is "Biblically Correct" often enough that it doesn't make me cringe with stupid, amateurish, Hollywoodish, ignorant angelic "stuff". Yes, this is all just fantasy stories, but still... fantasy/scifi has to have SOME basis in fact to be any good. Sniegoski did his homework about angels and uses all of that rich tradition to tell classic human stories.

I like this one. I like it a lot. I'd recommend it to anyone of any age.

They're wholesome, tense, scary, satisfying.

I love this Sniegoski guy!

And, BTW - these "Fallen" books were made into a TV movie, with a cast of really familiar faces I've seen on tv this season! (Vampire Diaries, Eyes)

Here's a quote from his website:
"All by himself, Tom wrote a four-book series called The Fallen, and these books were actually the basis for the ABC Family Channel mini-series by the same name in 2006-2007. Right now, he is writing two new middle grade series - Billy Hooten: Owlboy for Delacorte and The Brimstone Network for Aladdin. His wife hopes these will be optioned too. His wife thinks his first solo adult novel, A Kiss Before the Apocalypse, is the best book he's ever written. Dancing on the Head of a Pin, the sequel to A Kiss Before the Apocalypse, came out in April 2009. His newest release as of October 2009 is Legacy, a novel which answers the age-old question: What if you found out your deadbeat father is a superhero?"

Absolutely entertaining reading.

You can still get the ABC Family Channel mini-series on iTunes.

Yes, I shelled out for that, too. This is the price a person has to pay when they're LATE to the party! I REALLY WISH ABC Family had advertised this mini-series better - I would have been there if I'd seen even ONE advertisement for it.

Whatever.

Don't just get this one book - you'll want the whole series, so just buy it all NOW! Buy all the Remy Chandler series, too. Go ahead. You know you'll want to read those, too. You'll want to read them more than one time.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe It!, August 16, 2009
This review is from: The Fallen: Aerie (Mass Market Paperback)
I give this book a 5, but after i read it I got so excited for the 4th one. I checked here, and saw the giant price mark for it, and just got ticked off. Now I'll never be able to read it unless I search high and low for it... which I was hoping I wouldn't have to. It's a 5 dollar book... and just for one copy of the 4th one is just a big hole in my allowance.
