A (Temporary) End to an Epic, August 11, 2009
This review is from: Fallen Angel, Volume 6: Cities of Light and Dark (v. 6) (Paperback)
And here we are, at the climax of FALLEN ANGEL. This volume concludes not only the Moloch arc that began in the
previous volume, but also wraps up FALLEN ANGEL as an on-going series. The series eventually continues with the Reborn miniseries, which guest stars Joss Whedon's Illyria, but knowing that this book concludes with #33 and that there won't be a #34... well, in a large way, it's the end of something big.
It's epic, gives all of the characters the time they deserve, wraps up all the main character and story arcs from the series, and introduces a new status quo for Bete Noire for when Peter David eventually continues the book. There is a fair share of triumph and tragedy, and Liandra even gets to talk to someone we've been waiting to see her talk to for more issues than I can count. I'm being vague, I know, but just trust that Peter David definitely gives his epic series a satisfactory ending. It doesn't quite match the level of tension of
the fifth volume and it definitely spends too much time watching Jude, Liandra, and Black Mariah bickering, but when it does get to the meat and potatoes, the pay off is pretty cool.
What I would have liked is either an extended last chapter or an epilogue. The denouement and, to a much lesser extent, the final battle between the folks of Bete Noire and Moloch, seem a bit rushed. It's still really exciting stuff and the action and character moments are shocking, tense, and... well, great, but I feel like they also needed more room to breathe.
Overall, very good writing from Peter David, and very good art from longtime Fallen Angel artist J. K. Woodward. While the main arc of the series is over for now, readers should also be sure to follow the series FALLEN ANGEL: REBORN. David's writing continues to rock and Woodward's art is better than ever.
