This review is from: Fallen Angel, Volume 5: Red Horse Riding (v. 5) (Paperback)
I might be partial to this volume because I got it signed by author Peter David at the New York Comic-Con, but there is no denying that this is a damn good book. It begins the Moloch arc, which is arguably the most epic story Peter David ever told in his FALLEN ANGEL series. It's my favorite book of the series after the
first volume of the IDW run, and a fine example of why comics have become one of the most interesting methods of storytelling.
Peter David isn't a conventional storyteller, so just know that this book will shock longtime fans of the series. The first chapter is told through the POV of a child who enters Bete Noire for his first time, and the city is in a pretty bad state. There are villains that we've never seen before wreaking all types of havok with no explanation, so it's pretty jarring to jump into. Peter David definitely leaves you guessing, but never for too long. He effortlessly uses dialogue to let the reader catch onto what is happening, and by the time we--and the characters do--things are a bit too late. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, but the status quo of Bete Noire is about to change. A new major villain is introduced, and all those morally grey characters that inhabit Bete Noire have to come together to face off against him. It's pretty epic seeing Asia Minor, Sachs, Violens, Jude, and more team up with the Fallen Angel, and when they do, you get a grasp of how much you've come to care for these characters.
The one-shots and fractured stories that made up the middle of FALLEN ANGEL are over. This volume takes the narrative into overdrive, and fans of the series and comic lovers in general won't want to miss this.
