This review is from: The Fallen Ones (Paperback)
These books hold up very well. I read them way back in '84 and couldn't stop until I had read all six in the series. The characters are a-typical;You've got the unstoppable swordsman rough exterior but with a heart of gold, The fearless, intelligent and beautiful princess, the evil and cunning bad guys, and comic relief in the form of a disembodied 2000 year old philosopher in a clay jug. The plot is pretty standard for a sword and sorcery story but the pacing and the descriptions keep the reader mesmerized. The sky city, the epic battles, some fought in the air on the backs of giant war eagles, the panoramic landscapes of the Sundered Realm, Prince Rann's graphic tortures. I searched for these books for years after I returned my friend's copies but could never find them. Over time I forgot the book's titles but I remembered the characters names and typed them into a search engine on a whim and lo and behold The War of Powers series popped up. I ran a search on Amazon and found them. I'm reading them again and am amazed at just how good they still are.
