Book Description

April 16, 2009 1608300129 978-1608300129
At 18 years of age, Clint Pearson was a rock climber and local track star, and despite his long hair and carefree dress, he was maniacally driven. Even after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), he continued to climb mountains and take risks, unmindful of the dangers. He shunned commitment and saw women as trophies, that is, until he met Ursula. A South African of East Indian descent, Ursula had grown up under the shroud of apartheid and had nurtured a healthy supply of caution in the process. At first she sought to maintain her distance from the brash and disheveled American, but after Clint and Ursula found themselves in a car, at night, inside a redwood forest, nuptials were soon to follow. Their differences were extreme but so too were their feelings for each other, and as Clint plodded through medical school, becoming emotionally entangled in the poignant dramas of his patients, the marriage remained strong. Then during residency training, financial pressures intensified, leisure time vanished, and Clint's MS progressed despite several medicines. On one occasion, MS medication even precipitated a high fever, and Clint's body had to be packed in ice. The marriage ultimately survived both Clint's declining health and his residency, but the MS continued to progress, making Clint's mountain-climbing ambitions increasingly unrealistic. Yet he remained an adventurer, a climber at heart. Would he push ahead only to stumble and fall or could Ursula and his patients somehow teach him to climb mountains of a different kind?

He's our doctor so maybe we are a little biased. Still a good read about a man overcoming the many obstacles in his life

5.0 out of 5 stars Falling December 7, 2009
By Susan
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a medical professional (RN) that continues to work full-time from my wheelchair, I found Falling to be particularly insightful and would highly recommend for readers with MS that are married and continue to pursue a career or a particular passion in life.
The way Clint handles his life with MS is described with obvious honesty, candor and humor. Maintaining his ambitious goals with distinct perseverance is the way I wish everyone with MS could view life, passion and their individual abilities, rather than disabilities. It is also a great love story about Clint and his wife, Ursula who experienced dramatically different upbringings. A love story that openly describes the love they share and the deep admiration and appreciation they have for each other.
I am looking forward to meeting them at a book signing in the very near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Memoir to be Enjoyed by Both Men and Women September 7, 2009
This is a story about Clint Pearson, a track star and mountain climber who takes on MS in the same competitive manner, treating it like a rival he is determined to conquer. He does it somewhat by not fully recognizing the MS and carrying on in life despite it with humor, ambitious goals, and an athlete's perseverance. It is also about Clint and his wife, Ursula, the contrasts of yin and yang, their dramatically different upbringings, and the love story of two people who despite their differences have a deep admiration and appreciation of one another. With warmth, humor, and honesty, the reader gets to know Clint and Ursula and can't help but feel they are two people you would want to have as friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read November 24, 2009
By Carolyn
I had tears in my eyes starting with the forward! Of course there was plenty of laughter as well. I know this is a memoir, but it reads like a fiction. The love shared by the two is evident in black and white on the printed page. You are truly missing something if you don't take some time out of your life and experience this book.

Thanks Clint and Ursh for sharing your life with us.
