Book Description

Laura Winslow Mysteries June 28, 2005

Part Hopi computer hacker Laura Winslow investigates a shocking web of drugs, murder, and smuggling in this gorgeously–written seventh installment in she Shamus–nominated series.

Part Hopi computer hacker Laura Winslow hasn't shed the sense of Koyanisquaatsi––the Hopi word for World Out of Balance, or, for Laura, the feeling that society is falling down. She's just been offered another hacker job by an anonymous client, work that would be illegal and probably unethical; her romance with policeman Nathan Brittles has lately been rocky; and her daughter has just come home with a baby, and won't tell who the father is.

But soon a woman named Mary Emich, director of park events at Tohono Chul Park hires Laura, revealing that strange messages have been turning up on the park's computers––signals that something may be very wrong in the usually tranquil area. Laura's desperate need for friendship pulls her to Mary Emich––and soon deep into a case that throws her already–rocky world even more off kilter. For a dark force has entered Tohono Chul: a crime cartel that masks itself as the village and park's protector is in fact involving a hopeless town in drugs, and even worse, people smuggling across the Mexican border. And amidst a backdrop of desperation, broken trust, and murder, Laura must question even those to whom she's become close, attempting to stop a criminal enterprise that threatens to destroy an entire people.

I really want to like David Cole's Laura Winslow mysteries beause they are set in Tucson, Arizona, my hometown and a city I still visit often. I've found the books, however, frustratingly difficult to read due to numerous errors, mistakes, and omissions. I had pretty much decided to skip the 7th book in the series, "Falling Down," when I read on the jacket that it centered around one of my favorite places in Tucson, Tohono Chul Park (Tohono Chul means desert corner in Tohono O'odham or what used to be called Papago). While "Falling Down" certainly contains mistakes (for example, Laura tells Ken Charvoz, the new man in her life on three separate occasions about being dumped by her previous lover, and each subsequent time it's as if the other conversation(s) never took place), there are far fewer mistakes than in the earlier books. Moreover, the story is generally well told and holds your interest.

Having said that, if you are interested in reading some really good mysteries set in the deserts of Arizona, there are better authors than David Cole. In addtion to J. A. Jance's Joanna Brady series (set in the historic former mining town of Bisbee), I highly recommend Jon Talton's David Mapstone mysteries (set in Greater Phoenix), Sinclair Browning's Trade Ellis series (set in Greater Tucson), and Betsy Thornton's Chloe Newcomb mysteries (set in the fictional town of Dudley, which is a thinly disguised Bisbee).
