Clea Rose was the most wishy-washy character I've ever read about. She couldn't make her mind up about anything!
[- I love Robert, we're getting married! - Oh no Nick 's back in town, I'm so scared! - Nick doesn't want me, I want Robert - Kiss me Nick, don't kiss me Nick - I'm marrying Robert, do I want Nick? - Stop, John is my first concern. Robert is my first concern. I want you Nick, but I'm still marrying Robert...]
It goes on and on... I still haven't figured out what it is about Clea that makes her so irresistible. So anyways, if you are a fan of soaps then you will love this book because it has everything you'd expect: love, loss, lies, misunderstandings, secrets, more lies, sex and revenge (not necessarily in that order). If not I suggest skipping this one. Personally, I just got tired of her changing her mind every other sentence, but to each their own. It was ok.

It takes place in Washington state.

And I'm shocked - because with the amount of secrets and lies in this book, well, they're usually set in the South.

I spent a good portion of this book angry - angry for Nick for losing ten years of his life, and he didn't eve do it! Angry at Clea, because she's too damned confused for most of the book. Angry at John for being a difficult child. Angry at Vivian for being an overbearing mother. Angry at Maude for being a horrible mother. Angry at missing Mr. Lombard - because he was missing. Angry at the Bloomfields for being a bunch of snobs. And especially angry at Robert, because as Ms. James introduces him, she mentions that he fixes his hair when a tiny bit gets out of place - and you know a guy who does that is going to be an ass.

So all this anger? It adds up to a pretty awesome read. It's riveting. There's mystery, there's angst, there's violence, there's lots of love and a little bit of sex, and a BIG GIANT TWIST that I completely didn't see coming (and I usually get those twists long before they happen, so kudos to Joleen James for pulling the wool over my eyes. I actually stayed home from all my annoying errands to read this. And if I give up doing annoying things, then you know the book is really good. Plus it's well edited

Amateurish, high school writing. "She could see the prowess in his eyes".Tired cliched plot.Good girl falls for bad boy instead of local golden boy. Gets pregnant, bad boy goes to jail for crime he didn't commit indirectly caused by golden boy. After years of being a single mother, heroine decides to marry golden boy.Bad boy comes back to town and she is forced to choose between them. Many pages of drivel before she finds the guts to go against parents wishes. They even had to make golden boy a Senator's son.I kept wishing she would choose herself and grow up already.

I found a lot of "REAL" to love about this romance. REAL characters, a real town with very real social classes and issues, and lots of REAL emotions for the reader! I did INDEED fall for sexy Nick and his passion and devotion.
As a mature reader, I found it meaningful that the author incorporated REAL life themes such as the power in truth and the lasting sting of regret. I appreciated the authors REAL and contemporary approach to including the child as a priority to both Clea and Nick.
Truly a plot with surprises enough to make for a devoted read.
As for the REAL ending, I loved it. Well done, but when can we expect a sequel Joleen James?

I fell for Nick too. This was a really good and fast read. Nick seems like a bad boy but sometimes people are not what they seem. I would recommend this book.

Loved how they were together years ago, and already knew each other. Didn't like how Clea listened to everyone else regarding Nick and her son. There definitely should have been an epilogue to see how everything turned out.
