2.0 out of 5 stars Novel equals religious soap opera.
I really like the first 5 pages of the book. I grew up Lutheran and in the opening pages of the novel the lead character expressed thoughts strikingly similar to my own thinking as a teenager stuck in church. I really wanted to like the rest of it, but ended up skimming the mid-section b/c the characters lacked depth and were predictable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A deftly written and highly recommended novel, March 5, 2007
This review is from: Falling to Him (Paperback)
Faryn is eighteen years old and trying to balance her constricted life as the daughter of a Lutheran pastor with the heady anticipation and experiences of being on her own as enters college. It's there that she first discovers her budding sexuality. Faryn's mother Alice is also having to cope trying to keep up appearances as a devoted preacher's wife while struggling with her husband's neglect of a 38-year old woman's needs - compounded by his embarking on an extended mission trip in Mexico and leaving her alone in an empty house and with an aching heart. "Falling To Him" is a story of generational struggles, the mother's growing attraction to the handsome assistant pastor at her husband's church, a young woman in college struggling to reinvent herself (and falling in love with an older man with the inevitable heartbreaks), and both women's ultimate attempts to satisfy their needs, achieve their heart's desires, and connect with God and the men in their respective live. "Falling To Him" is a deftly written and highly recommended novel of complex and engaging characters caught up in a web of personal issues that will grip the reader's rapt attention from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than I anticipated!, October 21, 2007
This review is from: Falling to Him (Paperback)
I read this book on the advice of some good friends, and I'll admit I was skeptical that I would like it (based on my presumption that it was a romance... don't judge a book by its cover!) I found myself swept up in the story lines and I couldn't put it down. It was a great read; easy to follow yet not elementary in its writing, and with a wonderfully refreshing story line. Great book!

While the author makes a point that women sometimes give up themselves for men, she need not paint the male characters as powerful; this makes the women seem even more like pawns - not as independent but imperfect beings in their own right.

I will never sit in church and daydream quite the same way again! I will think of Faryn and her outrageous mind escapes. I'm not Lutheran, but I could become one very soon! You guys are having a lot more fun!!
