"Joey & Joe together again ~ Jazz at its finest hour!",
This review is from: Falling in Love Again (Audio CD)
Take a sample listen to this latest Joey DeFrancesco release "Falling In Love Again", featuring vocals and arrangements by Joe Doggs (we all know him without his sunglasses) he's such a "Goodfella" and doesn't spend much time "Home Alone" ~ otherwise this soulful Newark, New Jersey Jazz citizen gives us his all or nothing at all ~ born 2/9/1943 he's given us his all and then some. Almost an hour in length of little doggie treats Gershwin, Porter, Kern, Mercer, Rodgers, Hart, Burke, Lawrence, Hollaender, Lerner, Carter, Scott, Lewis, Fain, Webster, Johnston and Altman ~ passionate and fresh arrangements that we dig in the coolest way ~ DeFrancesco on the new Hammond B-3 is amazing, with sidemen Pat Martino (guitar), Red Holloway (drummer), Jeff "Hammer" Hamilton (drummer), Ramon Banda (conga drums), Elijah Davis (trumpet), Ron Eschete (rhythm guitar), Kevin Eubanks (rhythm guitar), Bryon "Wookie" Landham (drummer) Ralph Moore (tenor saxopone) each adding vibes with style and tradition. Entire eleven performances are in a "can you dig it" groove ~ some stand outs come to mind "BUT NOT FOR ME", a Gershwin standard, gives way to each member of the ensemble to shine, outstanding arrangement by Joe Dogg ~ "DEARLY BELOVED", the Kern/Mercer tune is so "hip" with vocals and musicians blending in to weave the coolest piece of fabric you've ever heard ~ "CAN'T WE BEGIN AGAIN", beautiful ballad sung with a soul-ful mourn, haunting trumpet solo by Elijah Davis, the vocal is right on ~ gotta love it! Total Time: 58:59 on 11 Tracks ~ Concord Jazz 2160 ~ (7/10/2003)

From one jazz singer to another,

Notwithstanding the negative review from the all-knowing critic, I found this album outstanding and Joe Pesci's interpretation of all the tunes outstanding and his phrasing impeccable! The musicians accompanying him are incredible. I LOVE the quality of his voice. If he had chosen to continue suffering as a jazz singer instead of using his acting talents, he would have undoubtedly eventually have been successful. All the musicians I know have been listening to him intently. I can't say enough good things about this singer! He is GREAT!!!!!

...P>I am a jazz singer in the midwest and thought I had heard it all. Don't get me wrong, I love Jimmy Scott, but THIS is the album I always wished he'd recorded. If you love Jimmy Scott or Billie Holiday, and are searching for the most inventive vocal phrasing you've heard in years, this CD will knock you out!<P... I haven't been this excited over a "new" singer in years. Absolutely incredible!

Joey D on the B3 is always a treat and it's hard to go wrong with one of his albums. The big surprise here is the real life identity of guest vocalist "Joe Doggs" who does a fine job with an assortment of jazz standards.

Gulp!!,

I fear that if I gave this album anything less than 5 stars that I'd end up in a hole in the desert somewhere with my head caved in.
But, honestly, this is an awesome, swinging album! Some of the best interpretations of these famous jazz standards I've ever heard sung. Maybe George Carlin is right...

Who knew Truman Capote could sing!,

Joe Doggs may be a jazz legend of some kind (in whose mind, by the way?) but frankly, I find his voice incredibly creepy. It's high-pitched and other worldy, the kind of voice one would expect from someone whose testicles hadn't completely dropped. And he doesn't style these songs as much as mangle them. But, hey, Quincy Jones in his liner notes writes that "Joe Doggs is the real deal and I adore this man!" So make up your own mind -- but listen to samples before spending your money.
