Book Description

Serving within the supposed pinnacles of power as a respected and influential U.S. Senator from South Carolina, Jim DeMint often felt frustrated and powerless to fight against the frightening growth of the federal bureaucracy and refute the mistaken idea that ever-bigger government is the solution to the nation's problems.

In his new role as president and CEO of The Heritage Foundation, Jim DeMint has taken on the daunting responsibility of helping to lead Americans themselves to change their country's course, of redirecting us back to our founding principles and restoring and protecting our economy and culture for future generations. He realized that he - and all of us as fellow citizens - must fall in love with America - again.

In this book, DeMint illustrates why Americans must rediscover the power, ingenuity and creativity of our little platoons. He then introduces Americans all across the country whose patriotism was nurtured in exactly the same way, recounting example after example of how they're working together locally in what he calls the "little platoons" - the families, churches, communities and voluntary organizations succeeding on the model that smaller is better. They are the hands-on citizens who make America the exceptional, caring and can-do country it has always been.

DeMint illustrates why each of us - regardless of political party, age, race, religion or ethnicity - must rediscover the power we represent. The country's future is at risk, not just because of constant pressure from "the Bigs" (big government, big banks, big labor, big Wall Street cronies etc.), but because so many of us fear it's too late to solve problems so huge and seemingly intractable. Jim DeMint is here to reassure us that this is not true.

In riveting yet plainspoken style, he tells real-life success stories and educates us via logical, historical and fact-based explanations of the issues (education, taxation, regulation, poverty, labor, health-care, environmentalism, Federalism and more). He affirms the compelling truth that conservative ideas are really American ideas, and they must guide us as we turn our institutions upside-down, taking them from the top-down centrally-controlled bureaucracies they've become back to the bottom-up democratic framework the Constitution intended.

Through this heartfelt, fascinating and inspiring look inside the America of both yesterday and today, and the everyday citizens who are working tirelessly and selflessly to insure its future fulfills the promise of its beginnings, Jim DeMint is beckoning us to join him on one of the most meaningful and momentous journeys we have ever undertaken together: FALLING IN LOVE WITH AMERICA AGAIN.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In this important book, Jim shares stories of Americans standing rock-solid for their faith and values against the 'Bigs.' He speaks candidly about this anchoring faith, connecting love of God, country, and fellow man."—Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council

"With its bold ideas, this book is sure to shake up the power structure in Washington-which is what we expect (and love) about Jim DeMint. He is listening to the heartbeat of America: hard work, active faith, and local control drive real solutions. These stories will surprise and inspire you. "—Star Parker, nationally syndicated columnist and political commentator

"The heroes my friend Jim DeMint describes in these pages - like those I cover on the battlefield - are dedicated, resilient and committed to a cause bigger than 'self.' They inspire me - and they will do the same for you. This book is a must read for every American who cares about our future."

LtCol Oliver North, USMC (Ret), #1 bestselling and founder of Freedom Alliance

I can see in my life how important platoons are in everyone's life. The stories of the people in the book are fantastic! I see why America is so great with so many great people we never hear about helping so many people and turning their lives around.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Agree with Jim April 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
"Falling in Love with America Again" is a well written, positive, enjoyable book. it is written by a man who served as a truly conservative senator from South Carolina and so knows all about big government politics and policy making. Jim DeMint is a ardent advocate for small government and states rights. The Federal government should concern itself with the duties assigned to it by the Constitution and the rest, such as education and health care, should be the responsibility of the states. He talks much about the little platoons of family and friends, faith, community involvement and more. The book not only accurately assesses the problems, but also provides workable bottom up solutions to those problems. Top down, big government solutions always fail, but grass roots, bottom up solutions, think Tea Party, are winners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative read March 31, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
With over fifty years in the regulated insurance and securities businesses, I thought myself pretty well informed about the legislative process but quickly discovered I had much to learn. It's one heck of an interesting and informative read starting with the amazing accomplishments of Bob Woodson's "little platoon" in Chapter 1. After reading through Chapter 4 that detailed Senator DeMint's first hand observations and experiences with the inevitable financial incentive conflict of interest between regulators and the BIGS---government, corporations, institutions and labor unions, I pondered and related his experiences which were similar to several of my own.
He opines that the irresistible "cashing in" by regulators or staffs is not sinister, it's merely "human nature" for them to aspire to eventually becoming a high paid lobbyist for one that he/she now helps regulate. He makes a compelling case that the successful and increasing "small platoons" can reverse the tide of big government which is the key to minimizing special interest legislation. I believe he also means we need to help get the fiscally conservative republicans and democrats to take note and get to the polls in November. I happen to agree, so I went back to the book store; bought four more copies to give to family or friends and then one more from Amazon so I could post my review.
Being from his hometown of Greenville, as one might suspect, I've supported Jim since he entered politics. He's much younger than me so I can't claim to know him well but we've met and he is clearly not another equivocating politician---he's an intelligent person of character that has proven he can not be bought! The only place I'd rather see him than at The Heritage Foundation in the future is in the White House in 2016.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read and message: just what America needs March 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Excellent read, excellent message. Have bought extra copies to give to friends and acquaintances. This is a no-nonsense message that needs to get out to all those, both conservative and liberal (which by definition means being open-minded), who actually have an open mind to embrace something other than their strict party line messages. I will certainly be working to get the message out over the next couple of years, in the hopes that we will have better choices by the time of the next election than we did at the last one (and I don't consider Hillary Clinton to be a "better choice" unless her platform is different than it was last time).

Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
It is interesting that a book like this had to be written as the solutions DeMint offers for America are common sense solutions. Mr. DeMint is a man to be admired. Americans from all walks of life would do well to read this book and consider what he has to say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could hardly put it done. April 5, 2014

An awesome explanation of "BIGS" vs small "Platoons"

He knows what Big Government is all about. He was part of it and now (thank goodness) he is at The Heritage Foundation.
His explanations and examples of how the benefits to society are LESS with big government, big business, big banks, etc., and MORE with the small Platoons of family, neighborhoods, communities, church, etc.

I wish more folks "on the political fence" would have a look and consider his knowledgeable perspective

5.0 out of 5 stars I finished the book asking myself, "What can I do?" April 5, 2014
By Reeves
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Excellent book. Well written. Using real life examples and exhaustively researched material, DeMint explains in easily understood language not only what the problems are, but also what we as individuals can do. As a result of reading this book, I am determined to at least do something in my small circle of influence to help us fall in love with America again, and return our wonderful nation to full health and prosperity!

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Analysis but Lacks a Plan May 11, 2014
By pbcook
Format:Hardcover
Jim DeMint is not afraid to state clearly the problems with the Federal Government. From overreaching EPA regulations to job killing laws, he documents dozens of examples throughout the book where the government has expanded to the detriment of the citizens of the United States. Included with these unpleasant examples are engaging stories of various people or groups who are referred to as “America’s little platoons”. These “platoons” stand in stark contrast to the government intrusion by standing up for the values that matter and through decentralized plans, seek to thoughtfully live lives that benefit other people.

This book documents many of the problems in our country today and it provides supporting evidence for the claim that we need to fall in love with America again. DeMint fails, however, in the area of providing practical ways for us to get out from under the arm of the government. For instance, he is not completely consistent in the area of education. He does advocate homeschooling as an alternative to government schools but he also advocates school vouchers. With school vouchers, the government is still involved with education from a monetary standpoint and will dictate to a point how the money will be spent.

Love is not a strategy but an affection and to simply love something will not fix anything. Love is vital and the fulfillment of the law but it is not a law in itself or a plan to rescue America from an overreaching government. To do this will require something more substantial. This book was beneficial due to its emphasis on the people of America and decentralization but it should be read with caution because of its failure to provide a concrete path to restoring America.
