Book Description

June 20, 2006
Mary and Ross were in Rome on a junior-year-abroad program when they had their baby, Natassia, who was conceived on a dare: “Do it with no birth control,” another couple had challenged. “We’ll do it if you do it . . .”

Mary and Ross are unmarried, ambitious, and way too young, and though smitten with their daughter, they eventually—and with regret—abdicate responsibility to Ross’s parents, who raise Natassia in the intellectually stimulating (and seemingly loving) atmosphere of their Manhattan apartment. Fifteen years later, 1989, Natassia is an honors student and a violin player. Despite the absence of her mother, a world-class modern dancer who survives by living in the moment, and her father, a physician in the Pacific Northwest, Natassia is thriving—until her mysterious romance with a man she will not identify derails her so profoundly that her parents, grandparents, and even her godparents, Nora and Christopher, must come together to save her. A dancer, a doctor, two book editors, a painter and a psychotherapist—all are forced to turn away from and also draw upon the creative and intellectual endeavors that consume and define them. Struggling to buoy Natassia, her guardians sink along with her into the deepest darkness.

Mary, a Korean war orphan, must learn from step one how to provide the mother love she herself never received; indeed, the daughter's breakdown sparks the mother's coming-of-age. Ross, still in love with Mary after ten years’ separation, must face the consequences of his obsessions. And Nora and Christopher, burdened by a decades-old secret, use desperate measures to save Natassia—and their marriage.

Within the intimate universe of one unorthodox family, Falling in Love with Natassia explores the blurred lines between love that heals and sex that harms. These characters will shock you with how forcefully their hurt hearts demand restitution; they will mystify you with the paths they choose as they move toward recovery and redemption.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Monardo's sophomore effort is less about New York teenager Natassia and more about Natassia's beleaguered parents and grandparents and their circles of friends, all of whose struggles to truly grow up are even more painful and fraught than their daughter's. Mary Mudd, a free-spirited modern dancer, and Ross Stein, a troubled doctor, were college students abroad when they conceived Natassia on a dare. After four years of stunningly irresponsible parenting and an inevitable breakup, they sent Natassia to live with Ross's parents on the Upper West Side. Now, 15 years later, Mary's life has stabilized, and she's preparing to invite Natassia to live with her in upstate New York. Natassia has other plans, most of which revolve around a mysterious older boyfriend. But when the relationship ends, Natassia's suicide attempt and nervous breakdown prompt Mary's best friend, Nora, to re-examine, obsessively, a secret incident from Natassia's infancy that, when revealed, will either save or destroy both Mary and Nora's friendship and Nora's marriage. Monardo's sentences are as lyrical as those of her debut, The Courtyard of Dreams (1993), but after the initial series of revelations, an overabundance of detail swamps the plot. And the denouement, in which a group therapy session serves the same function as Hercule Poirot's traditional gathering of suspects, ties up loose ends so neatly that suspending one's disbelief becomes difficult. From Booklist

Set in New York at the end of the 1980s, Monardo's graceful novel centers on an extended family that has to come together to help a teenage girl overcome serious depression. Fifteen-year-old Natassia is completely smitten with her much-older lover until he breaks off their affair, leaving her crushed. Her grandparents have raised her since the age of five but are at a complete loss as to how to help her. Their son--Natassia's father, Ross--lives on the other side of the country and is grappling with a dangerous addiction to painkillers. So it is left up to Natassia's mother, Mary, a dancer who is forging a new career as a dance instructor at an elite private school, to step in and for the first time in her life take responsibility for her daughter. Mary is surprised to find she's a better mother than she ever thought she could be, but Natassia's godparents are harboring a secret that could hold the key to Natassia's problems. A big, completely absorbing, complex novel peopled by fascinating characters. Kristine Huntley

This review is from: Falling in Love with Natassia: A Novel (Hardcover)
I am a little over halfway through this novel ... and it is the most difficult book I have ever read (in a good way) for two reasons. The first is that the slices of life, the insights of characters, down to the words used --remind me of my own novel. And the second is that the story reflects an ongoing drama my good friend (a young woman and her mother/family) are experiencing now. Eerie. This is a story about heartbreak and the forces beyond our consciousness (or perhaps, underneath is better, depending on your perspective) that drive us. It is right on target. But, I can only read it in small bits. (That's probably a personal problem.)

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, November 16, 2006
This review is from: Falling in Love with Natassia: A Novel (Hardcover)
"Natassia," Ana Monardo's second novel is even more complex than her first--without losing any of the poetry which drew readers to "The Courtyard of Dreams." "Natassia" deals with difficult themes surrounding love, children and families (both conventional and unlikely) with rewarding texture. The characters come alive, not only because of how the author has differentiated them, but because their responses to life are as uneven and surprising as our own. A great but not easy "read." It seems like a natural choice for a bookclub of serious readers, as it is bound to elicit discussion.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Book, April 29, 2007
This review is from: Falling in Love with Natassia: A Novel (Hardcover)
Falling in Love with Natassia is a novel about family and friends coming together to help a member in trouble, however, it has a number of unexpected twists and turns. The title of the book leads you to believe it will be primarily about Natassia, whereas in actuality the other characters are fleshed out much more fully. Insights into the thoughts and actions of Natassia's parents, grandparents, and godparents are captivating. The majority of the novel takes places during Natassia's 15th year. She is living with her paternal grandparents in New York City and has a breakdown. One aspect of the story is about how her mother, Mary, has to begin to put Natassia's welfare first. Mary and Ross were quite young when they had Natassia and both went on separately to have successful careers, but at the cost of time with Natassia. Ross, Natassia's father, lives on the opposite coast and has his own issues that get in the way of him helping Natassia. Natassia's current troubles also result in continual stabs at the fabric of her godparents' marriage.

I enjoyed the first part of the book, but felt the later parts lagged in places. The most interesting twists and revelations seem to predominate in the beginning. Also, I never felt that Natassia herself was a very well developed character. Her ability to write in an academic style on behalf of her mother seemed to come out of nowhere. And, I actually came to be more interested in the plotlines involving the other characters.
