Falling for Mr Wrong is what Polly does best. When her husband leaves her, she decides to give up men for good and concentrate on her career as a literary agent, but as her professional profile soars, she finds that in the eyes of the world, life without a man is just not on.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Why did Johnny de Soto leave Polly de Soto (nee Atwell)? It should have been the other way around. Even Polly's stepdaughter, Luana, calls her father a jerk for the move. Johnny is a "megaloser," in the parlance of Polly's acid-tongued friend Joan Brock, a wannabe film producer, anything but the New Man that woman are supposed to want. Polly, the literary agent heroine, is vivid and lovably human?"galumphing" big, weepy, good-hearted and lusty. Gorgeous film star Hector O'Neill, who toys with Joan and breaks Luana's heart, has the sense to love Polly, in so far as he's capable. Could it be that Johnny still wants Edith, Luana's nutty but gorgeous mother, who left him? In crisp, witty sentences, Upcher holds the reader's attention through much of this British import, in which character is both destiny and plot. Upcher draws on her experiences as a writer and her professional life in publishing and in film to provide convincing details about the making of a blockbuster movie and writing and agenting other people's books. The large intertwined cast are nicely nuanced in their speech, but some characters are introduced with intimations that never pay off.

From Booklist

Falling for Mr. Wrong is easy when there are absolutely no Mr. Rights anywhere to be found in Upcher's novel of an unlucky-in-love literary agent married to an unctuous, egotistical movie producer. Predictably, when Johnny walks out on Polly, she goes right into a disastrous affair with (you guessed it) an unctuous, egotistical movie actor. The book's promo materials promise us that one of them will be Polly's Mr. Right. Oh, really? Smart, savvy businesswoman though she may be, Polly is a hopeless doormat where men are concerned. She meets Hector, a womanizing movie star (imagine!) on the Riviera set of her husband's movie, where he calculatedly seduces then (surprise!) dumps her. So what does she do? Tries to win Johnny back. Throw in a supporting crew of cliched sycophants, nymphomaniacs, and hypocrites and you have a thoroughly unsympathetic and unsavory cast of caricatures. Fans of Upcher's usually relationship-rich novels will likely be disappointed by such fluff, but fans of supermarket tabloids will love it. Carol Haggas

1.0 out of 5 stars Paltry chick-lit imitation, May 27, 2003
This review is from: Falling for Mr. Wrong (Paperback)
I picked up this book in the anticipation that it would be another light reading, another happy little Red-Dress-Inkish book to vacation from reality in. Instead, Falling for Mr. Wrong turned out to be a book with characters so negative I couldn't even finish it. I had a hard time deciding who I hated more - Polly's rude snob of a best friend, her self-absorbed husband, or shallow possible love interest Hector. Even Polly herself was kind of pathetic and not inspiring identification from the reader, just pity. If you picked up the book too because it was pink and looked like a fun quick read, put it back and find a Marilyn Keyes or an RDI. You'll find your afternoon was not wasted as mine was.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not A Lot To Rave About, February 5, 2003
By
This review is from: Falling for Mr. Wrong (Paperback)
"Falling For Mr. Wrong" by Caroline Upcher is just another in a long line of female scorned - "ohhh my life is [bad]" --- "I wish I could find a man to make me happy" fiction that is taking over the country. Now - don't get me wrong -- I love "chick lit" (as it has become commonly known) but this didn't even live up to the "chick" part - much less the "lit" part.

I found the main character and chief complainer Polly de Soto completely annoying and I will confess that I gave up at about chapter 18. I decided I had much better things to do with my time (consider that I recently got laid off from my job - so my time if pretty clear - doesn't that tell you something?) It's really not worth your time or money. There are many more interesting, romantic and telling stories out there. Check those out - there are many of us out there that have reviewed them. :) Cheers!

1.0 out of 5 stars I hadn't expected much from this novel..., January 7, 2003
This review is from: Falling for Mr. Wrong (Paperback)
...but I am still disappointed with it. I mean, who wants to waste time reading a bomb? Not only is Falling for Mr. Wrong unoriginal, the heroine spends the majority of the novel complaining about having helped her ex-husband become a successful film producer. This chick lit falls into the run-of-the-mill variety -- thus, I suggest you skip it.
