This is some of the most amazing music that was ever used in a film score. Its all here...from the opening scene on the freeway to the final act in the Malibu house. This film is one of my absolute favorites and the music is a major part setting the mood as D-fens moves across Los Angeles. The sound is better than crystal clear and the booket is a nice addition. At the price that is being asked its a wonderful bargain!

In 1993, James Newton Howard was a fairly busy man; he completed 2 soundtracks for films that became minor hits. The 2nd of these was Harrison Ford's masterpiece 'The Fugitive'; the first was Joel Schumacher's 'Falling Down' - a gritty, hard-hitting film about a divorced - and unemployed - defense engineer who exacts angry revenge against various injustices he encounters, even as he tries to make his way back to his little girl's birthday party in Venice, California. In his mission, D-FENS (Michael Douglas) got help in his mission from Howard's score as he defended himself against arrogant street gang members and a neo-Nazi surplus store owner, faced down obnoxious golfers on a course, and evaded Detectives Pendergast (Robert Duvall) and Torres (Rachel Ticotin) who were on the hunt for him.

Few scores can blend an orchestral soundtrack with such elements as synthesizer or electric guitar, but James Newton Howard has done an exceptional job with this. Tracks such as 'Hole in Shoe' - where D-FENS first encounters the gang members - and 'Drive-by Shooting', where the gang members try to exact revenge on D-FENS, but crash their car and D-FENS takes their bag full of assault weapons - use a sinister, pounding effect as D-FENS attacks the gang members or walks away from the car crash. Electric guitar is also prevalent throughout but is effective as it lends a great effect to the shots & camera angles, especially the overhead shots at the Venice pier in 'Falling Down'; a wild flourish of strings is also heard in this track as Det. Pendergast races to the pier to arrest D-FENS. A melancholy trumpet theme is heard a couple of times in the score as well; it's mostly heard in 'Falling Down' and 1 other track - this is the theme heard as the 'not economically viable' man is arrested by L.A.P.D.

I was so happy to see that Intrada records was releasing this soundtrack. It is so difficult to find soundtracks for some older movies and if you do find them they are usually really rare and expensive. What is really cool about the Intrada releases is that they include a lot of bonus features that other soundtracks, at the time of their initial release, do not have. You get bonus tracks, alternate cues, and missing tracks from other releases. The total time of music you get is a little over 70 minutes. You also have a booklet that contains much of the behind the scenes history of both the movie and score. It is indeed a great little package for soundtrack fans and Intrada doesn't disappoint. Now, your either looking at this soundtrack because you are a fan of the movie, a James Newton Howard fan, or both. I can tell you that this is a great score by Howard and probably one of my favorites by him. This is movie music that really captures the feel of the movie. The score at times seems "tribal" and it is a great choice because this city that "D-fens" is in appears to be a jungle. The music is dark, dirty, and builds to explosive bursts just as the character movies through his day in this primal urban setting. Listen carefully and you can hear a creepy motif of "London Bridge is Falling Down" on a few tracks. This is a very smart score from James N. Howard and it a great example of how music can tell a story. I highly recommend this score and would suggest getting it quick before these disappear again. Usually they are only released for a limited time or only small quantities are made.
