Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
About Falling Out:

In everyday life we tend to compromise. This is neither good nor bad. Well, in art it's merely negative, when in life it's just necessary. We give up things we believe in to avoid being left behind, or locked out. In this compromising life we also tend to fall in love. Not just with people, but with places, philosophies, societies, and our picture of what life should be. We stare sheeplike in the direction of this ideal picture. But we'll never get there. That way we're bound to be let down. And along the way, we are falling out. With girlfriends, boyfriends, families or maybe bandmates. We misunderstand, misinterpret or simply just don't listen. We get confused. And we hurt each other. But these clashes, bullfights and mannered conflicts are there for a reason. We need them in order to grow and to move on. We need to be confused. Some times we fall out with ourselves, and our expectations of ourselves. These are the hardest ones. But also the most important ones. Here are our songs about falling out. Some about falling in as well, but mostly out. Have a listen.

Peter Bjorn and John/Stockholm, September 2004

Product Description
The North American debut for Stockholm, Sweden trio Peter Bjorn And John, on Hidden Agenda Records. Falling Out is a assemblage of ingenious pop songs, cleverly recorded and masterfully arranged, sounds drawn from the simple (the Speak & Spell talking toy that opens the album) to the symphonic (tidy string arrangements). Think early Squeeze and The Jam and several decades worth of British Invasion, Canadian popsmiths A.C. Newman and Joel Plaskett, and the euphoric rush of The Shins. 10 songs about falling in and Falling Out of love with people, places, and ideas. Includes the Swedish singles "It Beats Me Every Time" and "Teen Love" (a Concretes cover) and the standout album opener "Far Away, By My Side".

Songwriters Peter Moren and Bjorn Yttling (producer/arranger for Concretes, Shout Out Louds, Nicolai Dunger, among others) have been writing songs together since their teens but it wasn't until hooking up with drummer John Eriksson in 1999 that the collaboration bore fruit. Since then the band has released four singles, three EPs, and two full-length albums (Falling Out being their second), and performed live hundreds of times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album!, December 11, 2007

Fantastic album. Slightly darker than the 2006 release "Writer's Block", and definitely a grower. Great songs, including the wonderful "Teen love", "It beats me every time", and "Tailormade". Special mention to the bittersweet "All those expectations" and to the Elvis Costello-esque "Big black coffin", probably the most beautiful tune these guys ever written. Buy this album!

4.0 out of 5 stars The first US release, showing the way towards "Writer's Block", July 22, 2007

I am absolutely enthralled with Peter Bjorn & John's current album, "Writer's Block", so far the best album of 2007 for me personally. This lead me to seek out the band's earlier output. This album, released in 2005, is the first US release, but actually the second album of the band (they released a debut album back home in Sweden in 2002).

"Falling Out" (10 tracks, 40 min.) starts off with one of the best tracks (and lead-off single) "Far Away, By My Side", which barrels on through you, and its harmonies at times remind me of early Beatles. "It Beats Me Every Time" (another single) is in the same vein. "Big Black Coffin" is a sad reflection on a failed relationship, with great lyrics like "But it's all clear and bright now/from the statements to the lies/from the big black coffin/to the black under your eyes". "Teen Love" (another single) is a cover of the Concretes' song, and sounds great. "Tailormade" is another yearner for better days, as the chuorus goes "Well I hate to be a downer/but this happens to be the truth/I got lost when you found her/bring me back my youth", wow...

This is a good (but not great) album, and you can tell that with this album the guys would eventually be on their way to yet bigger and better things with "Writer's Way", which is in fact a great album, and then some. Seeing Peter Bjorn & John live at Coachella a few months ago was without a doubt one of THE highlights of the festival. Check them out!

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't grab my attention, November 30, 2008
Not even close to the quality of their album Writer's block, but probably ok for huge PBJ fans.
