Editorial Reviews

"Falling Skies" follows a resistance movement born in the ashes of an alien attack that has left most of the world incapacitated. At the center of the movement, is Noah Wyle's Tom Mason, a history professor whose family has been torn apart -- his wife killed and one of his three sons captured.

This Paley Center for Media live event honors "Falling Skies," the science fiction drama about a group of humans fighting an alien invasion that has decimated ninety percent of the population.

Cindy Braun (director of operations and administration, The Paley Center for Media/Los Angeles) offers opening remarks and welcomes Cynthia Littleton (deputy editor, Variety) to the stage. Littleton introduces executive producer Mark Verheiden, who talks about the show's themes.

Littleton moderates the following panelists: executive producers Mark Verheiden, Darryl Frank, and Justin Falvey; and cast members Colin Cunningham (John Pope), Moon Bloodgood (Anne Glass), Noah Wyle (Tom Mason), Drew Roy (Hal Mason), and Sarah Carter (Margaret).

The panelists touch on such topics as: Wyle's comparison of his longtime role as Dr. John Carter on "ER" and his current character of Tom; working with "perfectionist" executive producer Steven Spielberg; and finding inspiration from films like "Jaws" in creating tension around "what you don't see."

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the cast's strenuous training with guns and motorcycles; atypical romantic scenes in such a tense show; and why the actors had to peruse Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" to prepare for their roles.

I like that this scifi show is not just about scifi and good action. I felt proud to be an American listening to Noah Wyle's history lessons. I really related to and felt I understood Patrick Henry's famous speech in which he said "Give me liberty, or give me death." Noah Wylie's portrayal reminded me of the type of heroic decisions and life choices our great American forefathers must have faced, every day. Seriously, one of the best scifi shows I have watched in a long time, and I grew up watching the original runs of Starship with Captain James T. Kirk.

It was pretty cool to hear their thoughts and ideas about the show and the characters they play. You get to hear their thoughts which I always find interested. It's like the comments on a DVD which I like to listen to.

This panel discussion in the middle of Falling Skies: Season 1 has lots of fun facts and insights regarding the situations, characters, and portrayals in Season 1. Enjoyed hearing how the actors trained for their roles. Also enjoyed having the cast members talk about their audition experience. Interesting to hear the influence Steven Spielberg had on the storyline, even choosing the moment at which we enter the story. There are a few teasers, but no spoilers, about the remaining Season 1 episodes and upcoming Season 2 storyline.

Season 1 Episode 5 "Silent Kill" is screened for the audience at the 4:00 mark. I suggest watching that episode immediately before watching this panel discussion. Some of the panel comments pertain directly to this episode.

Not outstanding, however interesting as far as how the characters of this series were developed. Liked some of the backstories and it was evident that the cast members did get along.
