4.0 out of 5 stars A wickedly good read, December 3, 2007
This review is from: Falling Upwards: Scenes From A Life (Paperback)
I picked up this book earlier in the year expecting a glossy re-telling of the 80's synth-theatre music scene in the UK --- an era of makeup, music and madness that pushed boundaries and produced some of the most surreal populist art this side of the Dadaists in 20's Paris. While I got what I bargained for, I also found a witty, sometimes unflinching autoportrait of a working actor and musician negotiating that tricky realm --- not between art and commerce, but between gainful employment and fragile self-esteem. In an era where celebrity seems to be our only measure of cultural worth, it's refreshing to read about a career artist whose life is fascinating and just as messy as any other mere mortal's.
