5.0 out of 5 stars Jump Blues At It's Best, February 22, 2002
By
This review is from: Falling Water: Live At Mae De (Audio CD)
I have long been a fan of Jump Blues, that lively hybrid of Blues and Jazz that makes me want to dance. It's lively music filled with joy and it's recent ressurgence of popularity means that there are more practioners out there and getting airplay.

Along comes Dennis Gruenling, a harmonica player from New Jersey who puts a new spin on the style. Gruenling is a master harmonica player, steeped in the traditions of the Chicago Blues masters. He can play just about any style he sets his mind to with apparent ease. This recording certainly demonstrates that he is an instrumental force to be reckoned with.

His arranging is what really stands out. Gruenling blends his band into one tight outfit. The horns and the other instruments are given equal attention in the band's arrangements with Gruenling acting like a Benny Goodman or a Duke Ellington, leading, yet recognizing his soloists with respect. He never falls into the trap that so often befalls harmonica players that somehow they must solo over every one. Gruenling handles his harmonica with a confidence that is refreshing and I hope we hear a lot more from him in the future.

I would definitely urge you to get this album, it's a keeper!

Hey, I went to high school with Dennis and I can tell you that he is one of the best blues harmonica players I've heard in a long time. He is also great live. This CD blends so much together and keeps you Jumping. You've got Blues, Big Band, Jazz and Swing all mixed into one and it gives you such a great feeling when you listen to it. I'm looking forward to other Jump Time recordings.
This is definitely something any music fan needs to check out. You're gonna love this.

Oddly enough, the title of this cd is a wonderful explanation of its content... combination of swing, big band, blues, and a little jazzy...absolutely JUMP! condusive to toe-tapping, finger snapping... upbeat music that you will not be able to sit down and listen to.. you will find yourself standing up and moving to the music... Can't wait to catch this group live!!!
