Excellent starter for the subject, December 31, 2003
This review is from: Fallof Saxon England (Hardcover)
The book gives a very comprehensible and accessible narrative for anyone pursuing an interest in this subject. Starting from the fall of the Roman Empire and ending with the last entry in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle the reader comes away with a very satisfying account of Saxon England. This book is by no means "dry." Richard Humble manages to give personality to the people that he is writing about and concentrates on telling the story than give a lesson. Most importantly it makes one want to pick up more books on the subject. The book is not a definitive work, but it is a wonderful general overview and a great addition to an armchair historians library.
