Book Description

July 1, 2001
Top-Gun instructor Luke Henry quits the Navy to start a private aerial combat school in Nevada. A lucrative contract with the U.S. government brings him twenty Russian MiG-29 fighter planes--on the condition that he train a group of Pakistani Air Force pilots handpicked by the Department of Defense.

Luke is hesitant to train fighters from another country in the skills he learned at Top-Gun, but he cannot open the school without agreeing. The closer he gets to these students, however, the more he suspects that they may have an agenda of domestic terrorism that will soon spiral out of control.

James W. Huston scores big with his most riveting and thought-provoking thriller yet, filled with exciting twists and turns until the startling conclusion.

From Publishers Weekly

Mining the ever-popular mother lode of military techno-thrillers, Huston's fourth novel (after Flashpoint) is a lukewarm effort with more spills than chills and even less plot credibility. Huston is himself a former navy "Topgun" jet fighter pilot, and this novel relies heavily on aviation jargon and modern aerial combat. Navy Lt. Luke Henry, a hotshot Topgun instructor, is forced out of the navy after being blamed for a deadly aircraft accident that was not his fault. Resolved to keep flying, he starts a private, commercial Topgun school in the Nevada desert. Almost immediately, he draws lucrative military contracts to train fighter pilots; a sneaky government official even provides him with Russian MiG-29 jets for training. But hopelessly na‹ve Luke is being set up. The terrorist bad guys play him like a cheap fiddle, bribing and blackmailing their way into the school. Aided by the Russian mafia, they hope to incite a nuclear war between Pakistan and India, but first they want to orchestrate the most devastating terrorist attack ever on American soil. Several exciting jet dogfights provide the action as Luke and his squadron pals battle the terrorists at high altitude, with air-to-air missiles zooming all over the sky. The aviation scenes are best, but back on the ground, Huston's characters and plot devices do not hold up. The only character of substance is a disgraced Russian pilot who has infiltrated Luke's school with an agenda of his own. Even the bad guys are corny caricatures of thugs and zealots, and Luke is left with nothing to do but shoot down nearly everybody in sight.

From Library Journal

First comes an assault at the Israeli border, then an attack on a bus within Israel that leaves four adults dead. It is clear that a new terrorist group is operating in the Middle East, and navy pilot Sean Woods wants someone to do something about it; one of the people killed on the bus was a fellow navy pilot. Sean is angry because no one in the United States seems to care, but then Sean is always angry with someone. While this anger can work if the character develops as the book progresses, Sean does not. When he makes mistakes, his arrogant response is simply "oh well," and he is on to the next self-centered assumption. Worse, there aren't any other characters to like because they all simply serve as foils for Sean. The author's background as a lawyer and former navy pilot is evident in his writing; whether his pilots are running operations off an aircraft carrier or coming up with constitutional legal solutions, the details are all thereAand they are nicely handled. If you have readers who love the technical stuff, this new work by Huston (The Price of Power) is for them. Otherwise, this is not a priority purchase.AJane Jorgenson, Madison P.L., WI

More About the Author

James W. Huston grew up in West Lafayette, Indiana and attended the University of South Carolina on a Navy ROTC scholarship. He majored in History with a minor in English. During his senior summer he did an exchange cruise with the French Navy then attended the University of Warwick in England to study English Reformation history and English literature.

After college he received his Navy wings as a Naval Flight Officer and was assigned to VF-84, the Jolly Rogers on the USS Nimitz. With others in VF-84, he participated in making the movie, The Final Countdown, including flying in numerous scenes and filming and directing others. While with the Jolly Rogers he was selected to attend TOPGUN.

After leaving active duty he attended the University of Virginia School of Law. He moved to San Diego to join a firm and began flying in the Navy Reserves. After a few years he transferred his reserve duty to Naval Intelligence.

He started writing in the early 90s by writing op/ed pieces for the San Diego Union-Tribune. After a couple of years of writing for the paper, he decided to try fiction. Like many aspiring writers, neither his first novel nor his second was accepted for publication. But his third was different. It combined all his experience into a compelling story -- military action, political intrigue, and Constitutional Law. He found a clause in the U.S. Constitution that hadn't been used since 1812. He posed the simple question: "What if it was used today? What would happen?"

His other novels have built on the same themes. Politics. Law. Military action. Some have more of one area than the others, but they remain true to his style and ask compelling questions while providing a thrilling read. His eighth novel, FALCON SEVEN, is due to be released on May 11, 2010.

James W. Huston is a partner in the international law firm of Morrison & Foerster and works in the San Diego office. For additional information on his books visit his website: www.JamesWHuston.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reads Like Tomorrow's Headlines, August 23, 2002

This review is from: Fallout (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a flatout good read - It kept me turning the pages well into the wee hours. Full of action and intrigue it will carry you along as terrorists penetrate the Homeland to begin carrying out a very plausable and troubling attack. However, it doesn't end there. If you like Tom Clancy, Dale Brown, or Richard Herman
you will enjoy the adventure that James Huston has laid out for you. Buckle up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Fast Pace, December 20, 2002
This review is from: Fallout (Library Edition) (Audio Cassette)
I thought the book was very interesting as well as fast pace. It could have been a little longer, mainly because it was so good. I would have liked a little more story behind the terrorists preparations prior to entering the school, but other than that I would have to say this is a very excellent book. Anyone who has served in the military will love this book, and even if you haven't I would say give it a shot!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read, but could have been better, September 4, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: FALLOUT (Hardcover)
I enjoyed the book for the most part, although I was left wanting more at the end. I kept waiting for there to be more to the plot. The opening sequence didn't seem to fit with the rest of the book, Vlad's story was incomplete or too glibly finished, and the setup for the climax (the two attacks) seemed rushed as did the climax itself (or should I say anti-climax). I wanted more about the school and the training, more development of some of the secondary characters like Thud and the UFO fellow or Thud's dad. In short, there was lots of potential, but a lot of it was left on the table.
