From an A. Co. 1/8 Marine,
By
This review is from: Fallujah, with Honor; First Battalion, Eighth Marine's Role in Operation Phantom Fury; Expanded 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
I was there with Alpha Co. 1/8 Weapons Plt. Attached to 1st Plt.I pre-ordered this book, hoping for the best. What I got was just amazing. I read it from cover to cover in a day. All the stories, atleast the ones from Alpha Company brought back memories. This book was written well, and is nothing but factual. Some of the names/ranks are wrong but that can be forgiven. It gave the average person insight into what we went through in that city. And brought back alot of memories of the things we did. After I was done reading it I passed it along to my family to take a gander at. They were all pleased with it also. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a little knowledge on what really went down in the streets of Fallujah.

from a mom whose son died in Fallujah,

This review is from: Fallujah, with Honor; First Battalion, Eighth Marine's Role in Operation Phantom Fury; Expanded 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
I vehemently disagree with the reviewer in Ohio! Surely he hasn't met one single Marine who fought in that battle, nor has he heard the stories of the buddies who died in their arms, nor has he talked to the parents of sons who didn't return. Our son was in Bravo Company, which sustained so many losses in wounded Marines or casualties, that replacements had to be flown in from the U.S. What they did there will go down in Marine history! The insurgents no longer have Fallujah as a stronghold, and they don't dare face thousands of Marines again in urban warfare because THEY LOST! The January, 2005 elections were peaceful because of the weapons caches found and the insurgents that were routed out of that city. We must never forget that the price of freedom is the blood of heroes!

Thank you Gary Livingston,
This review is from: Fallujah, with Honor; First Battalion, Eighth Marine's Role in Operation Phantom Fury; Expanded 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
I just received my book today and cannot lay it down. First of all thank you Gary for taking the time to spend with the 1/8 and writing their story. A lot of names in this book I know personally. This book is personal. I am another Marine Mom whose son was in the battle of Fallujah with the 1/8-Charlie Company. B. Houck I am so sorry for your loss and the loss of all our fallen heroes. Sir I strongly disagree, sleepy?????? Many days and nights these courageous Marines went without sleep as their families did back home worrying if their child was safe and still alive. I guess you would have to be part of the 1/8 to truly understand the bravery and the brotherhood of these fine young men-United States Marines. I will recommend this book to all. God Bless to all our Gold Star Families. Proud Mom from Ohio

I can't wait for the 2nd edition,
This review is from: Fallujah, with Honor; First Battalion, Eighth Marine's Role in Operation Phantom Fury; Expanded 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
I bought this book because my brother, the Battalion Chaplain, was there in Fallujah and I wanted to learn more about what happened there. Mr. Livingston did meticulous research and presented an excellent account. However, it was a little difficult reading, because it seemed pieced together at times. But overall a fine account of the fine and honorable actions of those brave men.

My son is very open with what went on there so I knew about a lot of things that are in the book. I was very interested in reading about the battle from the start and what the other marines experienced. I followed the articles from the NY Times and the internet while the battle was going on. Gary did a great job on this book. He really tells their story. I'm very sorry for the losses the 1/8 had but I'm also very thankful that my son came home.

My son is quoted in this book on several occasions. I have read both this book and "No True Glory" and very briefly discussed them with my son, who told me that this book gives the most vivid description of what they went thru in Fallujah. I cannot discredit No True Glory, it is also a very good book. All of these young men are the bravest that I know. Many I know personally, some call me Mom which I take pride in. I met quite a few of these brave young Marines in New Orleans when I went to visit them. Even in those horrid conditions they were so upbeat and positive it was amazing. I love these guys so much, they are all my sons, they have a brotherhood that will never be broken. Gary Livingston, you did a wonderful job, thank you so much for getting true US Marine input in writing this book !!!

MY HUSBAND WAS IN THAT UNIT WHEN THEY DID THE INVASION OF FALLUJAH. HE WAS WOUNDED ON NOVEMBER 11TH. I READ THE BOOK TO TRY AND GRASP WHAT THEY WENT THROUGH. AND EVEN THOUGH A BOOK CAN NEVER TELL YOU OR PAINT THE WHOLE PICTURE I THINK THE AUTHOR DID A GREAT JOB TRYING TO. I RECOMENDED THIS BOOK TO A LOT OF PEOPLE.

This review is from: Fallujah, with Honor; First Battalion, Eighth Marine's Role in Operation Phantom Fury; Expanded 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
I bought this book, because I personally know people in the 1st Battalion 8th Marines. I really enjoyed how the author used real names and interviewed the Marines. Getting to read quotes from Marines I know really enstilled a sense of pride. I liked reading about people I knew and officers I had heard mentioned in converstaion. However, many facts in the book were incorrect. Some of the names were incorrectly documented, and companies that were present in some of the situations were not mentioned. The book is also seems very repetitive. As I was reading it, I kept thinking, "Have't I already read this?" The author may not have gotten some of the facts right, but he did a great job in portraying the perspective of the Marines in Operation Phantom Fury.

Anyone that wasn't with us in this battle will never understand! These words are great and the Author brings in great detail. War is confusing and hell, and this book allows readers to understand 1/8's battle. This is only the beginning about the story of Fallujah. Black Hawk Down was a very similar book, and to understand war is not easy: Especially if you have never been there. This book will bring you as Close to Fallujah as any thing can. This unit went right down the middle of the City, Controlled the main Effort!
