Book Description

February 1, 2000

False Accusations is a twisting psychological thriller, a tale of deadly revenge where the assurance of "innocent until proven guilty" is not what it seems.

In the predawn hours of a quiet Sacramento suburb, respected orthopedic surgeon Phillip Madison is charged with double homicide -- a cold-blooded hit-and-run that has left a young couple dead. Blood evidence has brought the authorities to his door. An eyewitness has placed him at the scene of the crime. And Madison has no alibi.

As his privileged world is brought crashing down by a psychotic seductress, as family and friends abandon him, Madison's only hope for vindication rests in revealing a truth at the heart of a lie. It's a disclosure that could cost him more than he ever imagined.

From Publishers Weekly

An apparent hit-and-run accident involving a car he owns results in a charge of vehicular manslaughter against an orthopedic surgeon in this laborious debut by California medical evaluator Jacobson. Two people die in what turns out to be a deliberate killing in a minority neighborhood in Sacramento, and Philip Madison's Mercedes is sighted as the vehicle, although he claims he was home in bed asleep, an alibi he can't prove. After he is arrested, Madison's attorney hires PI Ryan Chandler, an ace forensic investigator who will turn out to be the white knight of this narrative. Madison is already in trouble up to his neck: a beautiful but unstable volunteer worker for a mental health organization that Madison serves as president has suddenly and illogically accused him of rape. In the fallout from Brittany Harding's accusation, Madison's wife leaves him, taking the kids. It becomes clear quickly, as Brittany's emotional problems are drawn in large and stereotypically shrill outline, that she is the real killer. With all tension thus removed from the story, the author trots out some recent technological gains in forensics?saliva from the rim of a beer can for DNA sampling, retrieving and comparing Brittany's lip prints from a cigarette. There is far too much information about the novel's myriad cast of minor characters; numerous subplots add little to the main story; and a smattering of pharmaceutical and medical jargon essentially extends the slim material but does not enliven it. Moreover, Brittany's vindictive behavior is never explained; she merely acts out of female delusional fantasies. The trial is flat and predictably melodramatic. Jacobson's prose can best be described as wooden and graceless. This clunky attempt proves that forensic knowledge does not a writer make. From Library Journal

Phillip Madison, a wealthy and generous surgeon, finds himself the target of a vengeful woman looking for a quick dollar. Brittany Harding was fired for her bad attitude and insensitivity to the clients of the Consortium for Citizens with Mental Retardation. She blames Madison and retaliates with accusations of assault, sexual harassment, and rape. The pressure is such that her extortion of $50,000 works. The discovery that Brittany has done this before results in her having to return the money, whereupon she relaunches her hate campaign. When two people are victims of a hit-and-run and all physical evidence points to Phillip, he asks Jeffrey Hellman, his attorney, and Ryan Chandler, a friend and ex-policeman, to prove that Brittany has set him up again. The piecing together of facts that the police have overlooked results in a suspenseful and intriguing tale. First-novelist Jacobson writes with the confidence of firsthand courtroom experience. Essential for suspense and thriller collections.?Jo Ann Vicarel, Cleveland Heights-University Heights P.L., OH

More About the Author

My literary career has been marked by a number of events, but none more significant than an accidental meeting nearly 20 years ago. While researching "False Accusations" at the Department of Justice's crime lab, I met FBI agent Mark Safarik, who was awaiting promotion to the FBI Behavioral Analysis (profiling) Unit--the one popularized by TV's Criminal Minds. We hit it off, stayed in touch, and Agent Safarik invited me out to Quantico to tour the FBI Academy and profiling unit. Thus began my immersion in the world of serial killers, rapists, bombers and arsonists.

Seven years later, my education had reached critical mass: I'd made numerous trips to the BAU, had countless hours of conversations with Agent Safarik and his partner; I'd edited four published FBI research papers on serial offenders and attended numerous FBI training courses; I'd shot submachine guns with the head firearms instructor at the Academy; and I'd parsed serial killer interviews with Agent Safarik. I felt that I owned the material well enough to use this knowledge and experience in writing my third novel, the first featuring FBI Profiler Karen Vail.

Vail had an explosive debut, bursting onto the scene in the national bestseller "The 7th Victim." Sporting a vibrant personality oozing sharp wit and sarcasm, Vail is a woman bucking the odds in a unit geared toward men, someone who always means well but, like you and me, makes mistakes. She has fears, loves, and vulnerabilities--and despite being very good at what she does--suffers perpetual unease about the decisions she makes. Because lives are on the line. Errors prove costly.

There's little doubt that Vail has resonated with hundreds of thousands of readers because she's real. But at the end of the day, Karen Vail is a cop you'd "go through a door with." That's how law enforcement officers of all stripes describe a colleague you'd entrust your life to when bullets are flying. And that's how the head of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers association described Karen Vail.

Vail has directed the action in "The 7th Victim," "Crush," "Velocity," and "Inmate 1577"--which are set in exotic locales, from Alcatraz to the Napa Valley, Las Vegas and San Diego to Washington DC. And wherever Karen Vail goes, trouble tends to follow.

My years of research and training with law enforcement have influenced me both personally and professionally and have helped shape the stories I tell and the diverse characters that populate my novels. So sit back, crack the spine--or click that button--and immerse yourself in the gripping world of Karen Vail.

But--before you go: I co-authored a free personal safety booklet with FBI profiler Mark Safarik. Hop over to my website, alanjacobson.com, and pick it up. Did I say it's free? Did I say it's super important for you and your loved ones in keeping them out of the crosshairs of violent criminals? (It is.) And while there, be social...and follow me on Facebook and Twitter. See you in cyberspace!

Alan

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read But Sorry Ending!, June 13, 2001

I loved this book until I reached the last page and then I wanted to cry out in frustration! This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The suspense just builds and builds and you keep thinking things are wrapping up too neatly and something awful is going to happen. I could not even guess as to what it could be but when I finally found out I was disappointed. The ending just does not seem to go with the rest of the story. It is very off and not believable and I felt cheated. Otherwise I enjoyed the book immensely. I found some parts to be a bit dull about the DNA and the repetition of Ms. Harding's deeds but all in all a commendable first novel. I look forward to reading "THE HUNTED" and hope the ending is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, loved it, loved it!, November 9, 1999

This review is from: False Accusations (Hardcover)
Well-written, well-plotted, great characters. Kept my attention. These days I need a good book to escape everyday stress, and False Accusations fit the bill. Had a thought as to where it was going, but then the plot twisted and I had to start thinking all over again. This is one of the best books I've read this year. I told everyone in my office and two other people bought it. One read it overnight! We both agree: we loved this book.

Man alive, was that fun! The narrator, actor Z. Ivanek, makes this thriller from start to finish. By use of voices and inflections, he takes us on Jacobsen's journey of innocence compromised, and never lets the listener down. You won't regret the purchase, let me tell you!
