About the Author

R.E. "Gus" Payne is the winner of multiple awards from the Louisiana Press Association for Investigative Journalism. He is also the author of "Caught in the Crossfire" a non-fiction book that was the basis of the NBC-TV movie of the same title. Actor Dennis Franz portrayed Mr. Payne in the movie, the story of how the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office created a "bogus" conspiracy case to charge him with Federal crimes. Mr. Payne is perhaps better known for his international best selling periodical "The Death of Brandon Lee: The Untold Story," the basis for a major segment on "Unsolved Mysteries" some years ago. Last year, his "End of All Diseases" was published, a book now under option for a movie. He is retired, living in Mississippi but traveling worldwide with his wife, Royce.

This book has as much to do with the Jim Garrison/JFK case as does the man on the moon!!

Be warned. The author decided that to write a memoir about his personal legal problems would sell better if in some manner it could be linked to the Garrison controversy via one of Garrison's assistant district attorneys.

His gambit worked---I bought the book! I hope you're smarter than I was.

As the leading civilian authority on the U.S. Secret Service (and President Kennedy's interaction with the agency), I was much interested in this book by R.E. "Gus" Payne, especially after hearing mixed reviews about his work from other interested researchers. Well, I see some of the criticisms are valid but, that said, the book is well written and it DOES have some interesting info. on the Garrison case from an important vantage point. Get this if you are interested in the Garrison case...after purchasing Joan Mellon's and Bill Davy's books, of course. Vince Palamara

Mr. Payne's well-written account of his persecution by functionaries of the Federal government is yet another instance in which prosecutors and law enforcement agents put personal advancement well ahead of their sworn duty to see justice done. Of late, such instances abound, to the detriment of our democracy. I recommend this book strongly, especially to those who still believe in the tooth fairy and trickle-down economics.

More About the Author

Born in New Orleans but traveled widely for both business and pleasure. I was a magician while a youth, making public appearances in New Orleans at theaters, schools, etc.

I retired as a result of KATRINA where our personal and businesses losses were great.

I have been highly criticized for writing non fiction books about the wrongful acts of the FBI, U.S. Attorneys, etc. by members of those groups but praised for exposing facts of criminal misdeeds perpetrated by these folks.

When you read a nasty review of my books, the writer is most frequently an FBI agent who feels the necessity to speak up for his or brethern. Too bad.

My book "Caught in the Crossfire" was a NBC TV movie starring Dennis Franz as this writer. A recent book, "The End of all Diseases" is optioned as a motion picuture.
