Editorial Reviews

Falu is a classically trained Indian vocalist whose passion lies in combining her culture with contemporary American pop/rock music. Backed by a band of New York City musicians (Gaurav Shah, Mark Tewarson, Justin Wallace, Borahm Lee, Justin Wallace, Greg Gonzalez) fusing the Hindi vibe with inventive rock, Falu has developed a signature style that is catching the ears of music fans across the city. This sense of diversity is what makes the music of Falu so distinctive, as she has the rare ability to seamlessly blend a trademark rock style with a formidable classically shaped talent. From rapid, striking notes to soft, flowing melodies, her vocal and stylistic ranges vary with ease. Similarly, her self-titled album, produced by Palmyra Delran (The Friggs) and engineered/mixed by Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith), seamlessly transitions from powerhouse ballad Obsession, to Bollywood favorite Dum Maro Dum and on to the rockin beats of Hey Baby. Born Falguni Shah in the bustling city of Mumbai (the former Bombay), Falu has spent up to sixteen hours a day practicing music since the age of three. Her mother and grandmother were both classically trained vocalists, and the talent has undoubtedly been passed onto her. While in India, she was fortunate to have studied under legendary sarangi/vocal master Ustad Sultan Khan, who is featured on the album, forming a relationship that continues to nurture her creativity and musical spirit. In 2001, Falu moved to Boston and worked as a visiting music lecturer at Tufts University. There, she met up with the Indo-American band Karyshma as their lead vocalist, before starting her own band in 2003. Falu has performed for the Dalai Lama at Lincoln Center, appeared on the companion CD to the Deepak Chopra bestseller The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire, was invited to perform with the Silk Road Project (Yo Yo Ma) and is currently serving as a Music Ambassador to New York City from Carnegie Hall. Falu recently teamed up with Wyclef Jean to lend her unique vocal styling to the score of a A Place in Time, the directorial debut by Angelina Jolie, which focused on capturing the diversity of human spirit around the globe.

Full disclosure: I'm a fan and a friend. And while nothing, nothing compares to a live Falu concert, this album comes close. Falu trained for years and years in classical Indian music, then came to NYC and was soon "fusing" her classical Indian training with pop and rock. The result is sometimes electric, often quite moving and always creative. My favorite is "In the Rain," written by her husband Gaurav. Starts off with her singing a plea in Urdu, "I'm drowning, my love, save me," then breaks into a rock ballad in English, then ends with some genuinely spectacular vocal runs as Falu soars above and around the voices and instruments that accompany her. And the whole album is like this: one delight after another. Listen!

After hearing Falu in person with a 'world music' back-up group, I eagerly purchased her CD. I was so disappointed. Her CD seemed created to address and sound as western as possible, almost entirely in English with songs reminiscent of popular western ballads. At the concert, Falu sang in her native language and expressed deep roots in classical and some Indian pop - exciting, charged, gorgeous and engaging, unlike the CD, which hardly sounded like the Indian scale and/or styles. I look forward to Falu offering a CD of her native music styles like what she performed so eloquently in her live concert in upstate NY.

I know almost nothing about Indian music, so I didn't know what to expect from this album. One is immediately drawn to the fact that these are excellent musicians. The guitar riffs are clean, the band is tight, and what a voice Falu has! I really enjoyed the mix of Indian sound and good old fashioned rock n' roll. The album is well produced, and moves from mood to mood smoothly. The first track, "Without You", cooks vey nicely, and I wouldn't be surprised if it became a hit. An excellent first album from Falu!
