Editorial Reviews

Special edition features bonus 4-track remixes EP! Original soundtrack to the 2009 remake of the original Fame motion picture, essentially a rebirth of this very popular franchise. Fame builds on the acclaimed music, dance and drive to shine, while finding new talent and building a new generation. The film was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, whose fast rise in the world of choreography has made him a name in the music industry, working with such artist as Christina Aguliera, Jessica Simpson, Tyrese, and Britney Spears. The film will open on September 25, 2009, on an estimated 3500 screens. Fame has enlisted the talents of a Multi-Platinum, Multi-Grammy "Dream Team" to write and produce classic/new music for the new film including The Matrix (Avril Lavigne, Shakira, Britney Spears), James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Common, Jill Scott) and Damon Elliott (Destiny's Child, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce).

4.0 out of 5 stars A new Fame! For a new generation., August 30, 2009
This review is from: Fame (Audio CD)
Welcome to P.A.! Fame is back for a new generation with some classics and a whole bunch of new. The soundtrack is a blend of classic songs( I put a spell on you and Someone To Watch Over Me) with twists as well as new songs written for the movie. Included from the original movie are the songs Out Here On My Own and the title song FAME. Since this is a new FAME, the music is influened by R&B and hip hop. Sorry fans, no 80's pop here! It will be interesting to see how the movie ties in all the music in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't sound like a soundtrack!, August 25, 2009
This review is from: Fame (Audio CD)
So when I saw the preview about a year ago and saw they were redoing this, I was super excited growing up watching the Fame movie and show, I recieved the list of songs and I was kinda bummed out they didnt put 'hot lunch', 'i sing the body electric' etc. But when I heard this soundtrack I was surprised swell, I definitely love the songs: Fame, Ordinary People, Out of Here On My Own, You'll Find A Way, Black and Gold, I Put a Spell on You, and many more. Definitely purchasable.

3.0 out of 5 stars If You Can Handle Change, This is Good, December 27, 2009

I've seen the movie. Its about a high school for the performing arts set in the new millennium. NOT THE 1980s. Naturally, then, the music style is going to reflect the fact that the students are children of the hip-hop era. I say this because there are those who seemed surprised and disappointed that the film wasn't a carbon-copy of the Irene Cara movie from 25+ years ago. If you can get that prejudice out of your head then I believe there are some very pleasant surprises.

I think that Damon Elliott, son of Dionne Warwick and very good record producer in his own right, did a great job in giving the soundtrack a fresh sound. Love Anjulie's "Big Things" - makes my head bounce! The Fame title track sure reminds me of a song called "Personal Jesus" from a few years back. The eighties sound of the original would have failed in a movie such as this, sorry. Too Many Women is gentle, not a dance track, but nice. Naturi Naughton is definitely the star though, and her tracks rule! I'm afraid my least favorite songs are the ones Asher Book does. He's the "David Naughton" character in the new movie, and I can't stand his voice. He just flat can't sing. I wish they would have dubbed him with Jason Mraz, it would have come out better.

It's not the strongest recording, but the dance tracks work, not only within context of the movie but on their own. This isn't the soundtrack to 'Memoirs of a Geisha" that you can just put on and forget it because it's designed to be background music. This is a soundtrack that begs you to do something with it. Dance, sit and listen, something. I think keeping that in mind will help you decide if this is a recording you will enjoy.
