A new Fame! For a new generation.,
This review is from: Fame (Audio CD)
Welcome to P.A.! Fame is back for a new generation with some classics and a whole bunch of new. The soundtrack is a blend of classic songs( I put a spell on you and Someone To Watch Over Me) with twists as well as new songs written for the movie. Included from the original movie are the songs Out Here On My Own and the title song FAME. Since this is a new FAME, the music is influened by R&B and hip hop. Sorry fans, no 80's pop here! It will be interesting to see how the movie ties in all the music in the end.

Doesn't sound like a soundtrack!,
This review is from: Fame (Audio CD)
So when I saw the preview about a year ago and saw they were redoing this, I was super excited growing up watching the Fame movie and show, I recieved the list of songs and I was kinda bummed out they didnt put 'hot lunch', 'i sing the body electric' etc. But when I heard this soundtrack I was surprised swell, I definitely love the songs: Fame, Ordinary People, Out of Here On My Own, You'll Find A Way, Black and Gold, I Put a Spell on You, and many more. Definitely purchasable.

If You Can Handle Change, This is Good,
By I. Gross Georg "imgeorg" (Edmond, Oklahoma USA) - See all my reviews

I've seen the movie. Its about a high school for the performing arts set in the new millennium. NOT THE 1980s. Naturally, then, the music style is going to reflect the fact that the students are children of the hip-hop era. I say this because there are those who seemed surprised and disappointed that the film wasn't a carbon-copy of the Irene Cara movie from 25+ years ago. If you can get that prejudice out of your head then I believe there are some very pleasant surprises.
I think that Damon Elliott, son of Dionne Warwick and very good record producer in his own right, did a great job in giving the soundtrack a fresh sound. Love Anjulie's "Big Things" - makes my head bounce! The Fame title track sure reminds me of a song called "Personal Jesus" from a few years back. The eighties sound of the original would have failed in a movie such as this, sorry. Too Many Women is gentle, not a dance track, but nice. Naturi Naughton is definitely the star though, and her tracks rule! I'm afraid my least favorite songs are the ones Asher Book does. He's the "David Naughton" character in the new movie, and I can't stand his voice. He just flat can't sing. I wish they would have dubbed him with Jason Mraz, it would have come out better. It's not the strongest recording, but the dance tracks work, not only within context of the movie but on their own. This isn't the soundtrack to 'Memoirs of a Geisha" that you can just put on and forget it because it's designed to be background music. This is a soundtrack that begs you to do something with it. Dance, sit and listen, something. I think keeping that in mind will help you decide if this is a recording you will enjoy.

Disappointed,

I guess it is reasonable to expect an updated Fame to contain more current musical genres, but this soundtrack is way too heavy in hip-hop/R&B. I expected a wider variety of music. There are a couple of good songs, but just based on a listen of the soundtrack, I get the impression that the arts high schools today are full of Maxwell and Lil Kim wannabes. I can't imagine how some of these songs are going to work into the plot. I was really looking forward to the movie, but now not so much.

The most useless collection of noise I've ever heard,
By Alec Scudder "Johnny Joe" (Barcelona, Spain) - See all my reviews

Thanks for spare me the nuisance of having to watch this useless remake of a pop culture classic.
The ost speaks for itself. Noisy, pointless, repetitive and too Beyonce and Jay Dsoundy!!! I'm a huge fan of the original classic album, and the only worth pieces of this one are the (much worst versions) of the old "Fame" and "Out here on my own" themes. Then, in the 80's, the best female voices cared to sing and modulate her voices in a proper way, nowadays they only want to scream and cry like if they were on a bad horror flick!!! Mariah's, Beyonce's, Christina's, Whitney's lookalikes... LOUDING OUT LOUD all the time. Plzzzz, my head it's going to explode!!! On the other hand... where are the man...? Thank God for Sam Sparro's Black & Gold! Wait, that's not new...:) O points for this absurd re-destruction of another modern classic!

Soundtrack is better than the movie,
By
This review is from: Fame (Audio CD)
I saw the new version of Fame before buying this CD and find the soundtrack better than the movie. The music was never an issue though some performances are better than others.
Can't touch Naturi Naughton who not only steals every scene but outsings the other solos on the CD. Not only does she get a new arrangement of the orignal title song and "Out Here on My Own" but she has great new songs, "Can't Hide from Love" and "Get On the Floor" either one deserving an Oscar nomination for Best Song. Also enjoy "This is My Life" the equivalent to 1980's "Hot Lunch Jam." I actually find the new song works better in the new film, with a more improvisational approach. Asher Book is supposed to be the hearthrob but his peformances seem bland next to Naturi, though his cover of John Legend's "Ordinary People" works and the new song "Try" is sweet. Not sure what to make of his version of "Someone to Watch Over Me." The song worked well in the actual scene but does not resonate too well on the CD. Megan Mullally, fortunatey shows us how to do standards with her great rendition of "You Took Advantage of Me." Unfortunately the BIG FINALE "Hold Your Dream" tries too hard to inspire and is not as effective as the original's "I Sing the Body Electric." "Electric" gave me chills, "Dream" made me shrug. The rest of the tracks are used in the movie in the background and are just as effective on the CD, adding some hip-hop flavor to help keep this movie relevant. A major plus for this soundtrack is we get the complete versions of songs that were edited for the movie, "Out Here on My Own," "Ordinary People," "Try," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and "You Took Advantage of Me." The last two are actually studio versions of songs that I believe were recorded live for the movie. In the end, I wish the movie had been less trimmed with more depth to the plot while I wish the soundtrack had more peformance songs and less background hip-hop stylings. Recommended Tracks: Fame, Out Here On My Own, Can't Hide from Love |
