Something nice for the fan-historian-musician, April 10, 2004
This review is from: Fame & Fortune (Audio CD)
Here are 27 more quality outtakes with the focus on the Nashville (non-soundtrack) sessions from 1960 to 1961. The material is mostly 'A'; the singing is outstanding. Elvis' range during that period was amazing: from bass to falsetto, from blues to opera, etc. There are only perhaps five or six tracks which could have been issued originally, as none are as strong as the familiar cuts, but "Make Me Know It" is equally as entertaining and longer than the '60 release; "It's Now Or Never" has a more powerful ending note; "The Girl Of My Best Friend", though too slow, is otherwise solid and features a throughly committed vocal; "Milky White Way" is certainly comparable; "Starting Today" is another fine example of his new near-falsetto ballad style. This CD is a natural companion to the Ernst Jorgensen book on Elvis' sessions.

So much greater than silver and gold, August 15, 2004
This review is from: Fame & Fortune (Audio CD)
This Elvis fan club CD features alternate takes of songs recorded in Nashville between March 1960 and March 1961. These were the sessions for the Elvis Is Back!, His Hand in Mine, and Something for Everybody albums. These were some of Elvis' best recording sessions. The March 1961 session wasn't quite as good as the 1960 sessions, but it was still very good. Hardcore Elvis fans should really dig this.

One Of The Best In The FTD Series, November 23, 2009
This review is from: Fame & Fortune (Audio CD)
On March 20th 1960 when Elvis walked back into RCA's Studio B, it had been an extremely long time since he had recorded anything professionally. Just two days earlier, with the same Nashville 'A Team' backing band, The Everly Brothers had recorded their #1 Pop classic 'Cathy's Clown,' and now Elvis had to prove that, after two years in the army, he too was still a creative force.
Starting with eleven dynamic tracks from his crucial 'Elvis Is Back' sessions, this CD shows that Elvis had lost none of his edge, recording an amazing variety of musical styles. Here we have great Rock 'n' Roll, sublime ballads, Pop, Blues, and even a little bit of Gospel. These first tracks are the real highlight of this CD (and it's damn hard not to put them on "repeat") but we also get eight tracks from 'His Hand in Mine' as well as eight from his final session before 'Blue Hawaii.'
Compared with the other Studio outtakes CDs, 'Essential Vol 6' (which focused on the first four years of Elvis' Nashville sessions) and 'Long Lonely Highway' (which took us on a journey all the way through 1968), `Fame & Fortune' really works by just focussing on the two years 1960 & 1961. -- ElvisAustralia FTD Reviews
