5.0 out of 5 stars What ending would you give this story?, October 21, 2007
By
This review is from: A Slave Family / Bobbie Kalman & Amanda Bishop (Colonial People) (Paperback)
Young readers will explore the lives of slave families in the colonies. How slavery effected marriage and offspring, education and work is thoroughly explored in an accurate and lively fashion, inviting readers to question the meaning of what they read. Would it be better to do the hard labor in the fields, or do the work in the plantation owner's house, wearing better clothing and eating better food than the rest of your family?

The book contains a wealth of information allowing history students to make informed decisions in classroom or family discussion.

Lavish illustrations include photographs of costumed interpreters in accurate historical settings. A Slave Family is an essential component to a child's understanding of this challenging and often disturbing era of history.

1.0 out of 5 stars lordy, lordy, December 6, 2011
This review is from: A Slave Family / Bobbie Kalman & Amanda Bishop (Colonial People) (Paperback)
I don't know which is worse...400 years of slavery or the cheerful illustrations depicting those years of oppression that accompany this piece of children's "literature." This book chronicles the life of Quasheba and her family. It emphasizes how lucky she is to be chosen as a house servant! Written in 2003, I can not fathom how it ever made it to print. Please tell me that these books were given away at Klan rallies and that nobody actually bought a copy. I'm shaking my head from side-to-side right now.
