The Family Book of Midrash: 52 Jewish Stories from the Sages,
This review is from: The Family Book of Midrash: 52 Jewish Stories from the Sages (Paperback)
The power of stories makes religous truths relevant for any age. This collection of 52 Jewish stories aided my understanding of difficult passages in the Old Testament and revealed the openness, humor, and freedom with which Jewish rabbis interpet Scripture. My responses included laughter, tears, and overlapping stories of my own.

The stories are about the prophets of the Tanakh (The Old Testament) and early rabbis. The majority of the focus is on teaching morality rather than ritual and denomination. Some of the stories reminded me of Aesop's Fables and Greek mythology, but with one important difference. I especially liked the story of "How dishonesty entered the ark." Trouble and Dishonesty are personified and strike up a bargain to enter the ark as a pair. My 11 year-old nephew is a Baptist and I am thinking about giving this book to him.
