5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Showtime Series of All Time!
It would have been easy (and probably expected) for a reality series on the porn industry to showcase nothing but the most shocking. This review is from: Family Business -The Complete First Season (DVD)
It would have been easy (and probably expected) for a reality series on the porn industry to showcase nothing but the most shocking. While there's plenty of nudity and a few on-set scenes that pushes the limits of even pay television, this series succeeds because it allows you to see that porn is a business (almost) like any other, and the people involved can be pretty normal. Everybody is extremely likable - Adam is the hip, badly dressed drinking buddy, his mother is the caregiver concerned about her son's lack of a significant other, and Cousin Steve is the cantankerous relative who you can't help but love despite his lack of tack. Even the porn actors and actresses that frequent each episode are not the stereotypical strung-out sluts willing to be degraded for a few bucks. Instead, they're seen as fun-loving women (and men)who love their job. I'm sure some of this viewpoint is intentional on Glasser's part, but this is easily one of the most enjoyable reality tv series I've ever seen...it certainly beats the Real World, Average Joe, and those wretched Bacherlor/Bachelorette cretins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you expect and more., January 9, 2004

Most of us have already seen the show on TV, that's probably what's brought you here. Of course the box includes all 10 episodes on 3 discs. On the 3rd disc are additional features like deleted scenes and interviews with the cast. I was hoping for even more deleted scenes than were on the disc, but they weren't bad. There's a music video for the opening song as well. All of the episodes can be viewed with commentary by The Jay and Tony Show. You can also view the episodes in French and Spanish. I think this is an all around good buy. I hope this info helps answer a few questions you might have.

5.0 out of 5 stars a show unlike any other, December 22, 2003

I can safely say that there is no other show out there like this one. You might be sick of reality shows, but this one is worth it. Hey, let's face it, most of us have seen adult entertainment at one point or another. Going behind the scenes is amazing. You get to see a director set up the scenes, you get to see how someone gets into the adult entertainment business for the first time, you get to see what the guys go through to perform, you get to see what happens between takes... you get to see it all, basically. And even better than all that, you get to see Cousin Stevie and his questionable business practices, which is by far the most hilarious part of the show.

The DVD is a bit pricey--you're only getting 8 episodes--but I'm buying it anyway.

Good things:

Cousin Stevie's relaxed attitude towards profanity

Irritating things:
The inclusion of Seymore's son Brady as a major part of his life. (He's a major part of the show's intro but not really a key player in the show itself.)
Almost every aspect seems a little forced.
The opening credits.
The music (devastatingly horrible).
The comedy stylings of the Bob and whatever Show.
Seymore's Mom
Endless self-plugging ("I'm one of the best in the industry blah blah blah")
Seymore's personality.
Very little about the actual family dynamic. (Brady's mom?, Other famly members? Friends? Anybody?)
The fact that only three people talk to the camera confessional-style.

To sum it up: The show that sounded too good to be true actually is.

I still have hope for next season. Some more attention to production and a decision on whether this is a reality show or a scripted sitcom would make vast improvements. Also the music really sucks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just awful..., December 4, 2008

I bought this set really looking forward to it and ended up severely disappointed. More attention goes into the screenplay of a porno than into the scripted antics of this show.

It would be great to see an actual porn-related reality show. But this was just a bunch of one-dimensional scripted nonsense. Hey- the director! And his cousin! His mom too, what??? These people on the show probably lead interesting and sometimes dramatic lives. But every little staged event and posturing was just annoying.

They should have just turned on the cameras and let these people be themselves. When a porn-related reality show sucks, well that's pretty bad. They didn't even throw in enough gratuitous nudity or sex to keep the show watchable. But, garsh! It's cousin Stevie running around being a moron! Again!

2.0 out of 5 stars Regional codes?, December 21, 2007
This review is from: Family Business -The Complete First Season (DVD)
Family Business - The 1st Season comes with 3 discs.

Discs 2 & 3 are unreadable because of a problem called 'regional code'! Go figure!

Thoroughly disappointed.

Bummer. The 1st disc was cool.

An expensive problem.

The first season of "Family Business" this is the first reality show on Showtime that deals with adult entertainment. Adam Glaser is the boss of the porn company call Seymore Butts videos he's had over thousdands of girls having sex on film. Mari Possa in this season became a porn star for the first time it schocked Adam. Adam has a son who knows what his dad does for a living he thinks adult videos means two people kissing. I'm wondering whatever happen to that 19 year Canadan girl who came on a vacation to the States to meet with Adam on how to become a porn star that was the final episode of theis season. I hope these dvds be uncut and uncensord I want to at least see stuff that Showtime couldn't show.

I loved this DVD.

If you ever wondered what the Adult Film industry (it's not pretty) was all about, this is the DVD for you. I never watch "adult" films but I was facinated by this slice of life that you never see.
