For the holiday shelf,
By
This review is from: A Family Christmas (Hardcover)
This is a companion volume to RD's The Book of Christmas, with a piney-green jacket to contrast with the other one's deep red. More craft-oriented than its counterpart, it includes DIY projects ranging from cards to toys, plus recipes from James Beard, a section of prayers, essays on such icons of the holiday as Santa, the creche, and the tree, and stories and reminiscences including Selma Lagerlof's "Legend of the Christmas Rose," Valentine Davies's original "Miracle on 34th Street," the complete "Eloise at Christmastime" (with Kay Thompson illustrations intact), Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Mr. Edwards Meets Santa Claus" from the beloved Little House series, and Lincoln Steffens's "Miserable Merry Christmas," in which he tells of how he got his first pony as a gift. There's a wealth of vintage illustrations, too. These two books should be an annual part of your celebration.

Great crafts and recipes for all ages,

Have had this book since my daughter was small and we have used all of the ideas over the years. Just talking with my sister about the Ecudorian stars which are inexpensive to create but absolutely beautiful! Can be adapted from thread to embroidery floss or yarn. Using varigated thread or yarn speeds the process. Metalic threads or floss create dramatic results. A great buy!

Read it with your kids,
This review is from: A Family Christmas (Hardcover)
My mother bought this book when I was a child. It came out in the mid-eighties, and I was an avid reader. I read the whole thing, cover to cover, and it has been an important part of our Christmas ever since. I still have the original copy my mother bought back then, and re-reading it reminds me of family Christmases in the country in North Dakota, growing up. Love this book!

I love cookbooks! This is my favorite. For years, I borrowed it from the library to prepare Christmas meals for my family. The deviled crab, dirty rice, and cookies are family favorites that I still make each year. I also love the stories in each section.I love this book, and bought copies for me and my sister. If you can find it, buy it.A Family Christmas |
