5.0 out of 5 stars Great Training Video!!!
This is one of the best training videos I found. I've tried others and there not a quick and easy as this video. I recomend this video to every body that wants a well trained dog!

My husband is a fan of Richard Wolters (and owns Gun Dog, which he likes) so he suggested that I purchase this dvd to help with getting our kids involved in our dog's training. BIG mistake. Although the information is basically good (simple methods for teaching basic commands like sit and stay) -- it is painful to watch this outdated production. I forced myself to watch to the end, but learned nothing and instead felt cheated that I had just spent so much money on something that I would now be tossing in the trash. My husband suggested I try to sell it, but honestly I don't feel right hoisting this on another unsuspecting dog owner. If you are completely clueless about how to train a puppy, have a high tolerance for cheese, and don't mind paying a premium price on a poor quality production, then go ahead and give it a try. For everyone else, pass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch BEFORE getting your next dog, March 26, 2006
This review is from: Family Dog dvd (DVD)
This video offers outstanding insight into animal training and communication. It does not feature high-quality acting or cinematography, but it does offer useful information. I had a 1 year old dog when I heard of this video and wished I had purchased it prior to getting the dog. The exercises in this video made significant progress with an already unruly animal. I rewatched the dvd prior to getting my next dog, and she is very well trained and obedient. I am complimented on her demeanor and behavior daily.

This information in this video is very good. However, the video is dated...1990's era?. They should come out with an updated version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Family Dog, November 22, 2009
This review is from: Family Dog dvd (DVD)
This video does help anyone that is considering getting a dog or who already has a dog that they would like to behave better. The video attempts to tell a story while teaching you how to train your dog using a reward system. Years ago dogs were mostly taught using a choke collar but the main line thinking today is that the reward system is better. I know that Cezar Milan uses a choke collar today in certain situations and I believe everyone has seen his ability with dogs. I had a very stubborn fox terrier that was trained by a professional using a choker and she turned out quite lovely. I have begun to use the approach taught in this video and it seems to work well so far. (I think that any tool to train a dog can be affective in the right hands and can be ineffective in the wrong hands.) A choke collar can hurt a dog if used incorrectly. i.e., hard corrections. But there is nothing better for snapping a dog's attention back to the trainer than a choker. This video gives many useful tips on how to buy a puppy. It tells you things to look for when buying the dog that will insure a better chance of getting a dog with the right temperament. The dogs in the video that are used to show how to do many basic commands are mostly untrained. But there are dogs on the video that are trained to a high degree in the video as well. Those dogs are used to show you the degree to which dogs can be trained and to advance a story line in the video. All in all I would recommend this video to anyone that wants to try and train their own dog. Although the story is somewhat juvenile, the interspersed training though out makes it bearable. I don't think you could better spend your money if you are serious about wanting to train your dog and you are a person that reacts better to "show me" than reading about it.

It was somewhat odd how they teach thru this clueless family. It wastes considerable time. It did help with training, but could have been much better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Family Dog DVD, March 22, 2006

Unfortunately once you open a DVD it is yours. This is the worst
production of a DVD I've ever attempted to watch. It's like watching the Cleavers from Leave It To Beaver ~ Yet even worse. So far I've watched 25 minutes of the DVD, and of the 25 minutes ~ the first 5 minutes or so is all advertising for other training DVD'S. I would not reccomend that any one purchase this Item! Mine will most likely go into the trash!
