5.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous book by Patricia McConnell

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but not complete
I am not a professional dog trainer, but bought this book to help me work with some specific puppy training problems, like him taking the leash in his mouth and "tugging" with it and some "mounting" behavior, but this book is more about generally getting your puppy to "sit", and "come" and how to play fetch etc. which other books cover as well. Try "The Puppy Whisperer...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous book by Patricia McConnell, March 2, 2007
This review is from: Family Friendly Dog Training: A Six Week Program for You and Your Dog (Paperback)
Here is yet another fabulous book by Patricia McConnell and Aimee Moore. I am a reward-based professional dog trainer and have been using their new book, "Family Friendly Dog Training- A Six Week Program for You and Your Dog", as a supplement to my basic training program. The chapters are arranged so each chapter covers one week of a six week program. I can never cover as much material as I want in an hour class, and this book allows me to provide a more comprehensive program to my students. It is loaded with training tips and up-to-date training methods, making it a must have for the novice dog owner's library. Every professional dog trainer should be offering this book to their students. It will add value and quality to your training program. It's an easy and fun read for the pet owner, very affordable, and not lengthy, so I find all of my students can take the time to read it. I love how Patricia and Aimee describe their own challenges and experiences making the book enjoyable and personal.

Patricia McConnell has been the most influential mentor in my career. I have learned so much through her books, videos and seminars, and have read her book "The Other End of the Leash" three times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent general training book., July 7, 2007
This review is from: Family Friendly Dog Training: A Six Week Program for You and Your Dog (Paperback)
Patricia McConnell knows dogs. This is an excellent training guide for those who are intent on training their dogs themselves without benefit of a good class (or who can't find a decent class to attend), and it's also a great adjunct for those who are working with a trainer.

The book gives you an effective, realistic six week lesson plan and timeline, and is behaviorally solid (unlike the theories and methods of some currently trendy TV trainers).

I think all the ideas in this book are in The Other End of the Leash (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) but I liked the ability to quickly reference with this book. The tradeoff is that there isn't a great deal of detail. I do recommend it to anyone with an Aussie, Border Collie or similar smart puppy.

4.0 out of 5 stars McConnell is the best., September 11, 2009
This review is from: Family Friendly Dog Training: A Six Week Program for You and Your Dog (Paperback)
After adopting a large adult rescue dog who had never enjoyed the benefit of training, I began serious study of animal behaviorism and training. I believe in positive reinforcement methods and Patricia McConnell became the expert I most respect. Not only is she a PhD animal behaviorist, she is also the shepherding partner of working dogs, in private practice works with aggressive animals and is a true dog lover. She is knowledgeable, highly experienced, well-grounded and very enjoyable to read. I own every book/pamphlet she's written and highly recommend her to anyone who is seriously interested in humane, responsible dog training. Must reads from her other works are "For the Love of a Dog" and "The Other End of the Leash."

I love Patricia McConnell. She gives clear, concrete, easy tips to training your dog. Even our 7 year old had our 7 week old puppy sitting the first day he was home! I love that she lays it out in a 6 week process. You really just have to follow what she says and your dog responds. Consistency is key! Any book by Patricia is worth the money.

The training program is easily understood and simple to execute. It is not a miracle cure. You still have to put in the time and be consistent.
