This review is from: Family and Friends' Guide to Domestic Violence: How to Listen, Talk and Take Action When Someone You Care About is Being Abused (Paperback)
As both a survivor and a counselor, I realize how difficult it is to explain the intricacies of a domestic violence situation, let alone how to help. This book is the best I've found, and believe me I've read a lot of books on the subject. I read it and immediately passed it on to someone else who could benefit from reading it. If more people understood, the world would be a better place. Buy it, read it, pass it on.

This review is from: Family and Friends' Guide to Domestic Violence: How to Listen, Talk and Take Action When Someone You Care About is Being Abused (Paperback)
Family and Friends Guide to Domestic Violence is an excellent book. It is written in simple understandable terms and gives hands on examples on how to help those in violent relationships. It also clearly explains some habits, and reasons for violence in relationships. The information is very straightforward, and honest. As an advocate working in a domestic violence shelter, I wish I had tons of these to hand out to families freely. I am impressed, and often refer this book to both colleages and families!

Information contained within was most helpful in reaching out to a friend who is in what I perceived to be an abusive marriage. It was easily read and made suggestions for me to be most effective in assisting my friend. I highly recommend the book - keep it on your shelf after you've read it - 1 in 5 women is in an abusive relationship.

This is one of the best books I have read on this subject after 20 yrs. I am a survivor who became an advocate. This book is so user friendly and answers most of the questions you are asked. I am a mentor to some young women and the advice I shared from this book helped so much. I purchased copies for them and now they are mentoring their peers. One point I really was glad to hear someone else finally say is that low self-esteem is not the reason people end up in these situations.
If you are looking to start a support group and are a lay person, this book is your manuel to start with. It does not try to replace therapy but as most of us who are survivors know, we don't all need therapy a lot of the time it is just having the confidential listening ear or someone who will help us on that journey. I wished I had this book 20 years ago..a lot of the things outlined and listed I struggled and learned on my own after reading over 100 books on this subject. This is the first complete book that I found is short and too the point. I re-read the book several times and found myself motivated and actual started a support group. It covers a lot of the "what if" question that people ask and the "why" questions. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in educating themselves on the basic and would suggest giving a copy to anyone in leadership in your faith community. I have been an patient both in-patient and out-patient therapy and this book helped me answer a lot of questions in one reading more so than four years of therapy and $60,000 treatment. Even if you don't do anything but read it to be more understandable of the situation should someone you know become face with this problem. You will be so glad you purchased it. I even purchased a copy for someone who was in an abuse relationship and we made it our "reading book of the month" they did not get it until half way that they were in need of it because the hitting had stopped. Overall I loved this book, quick read but very powerful.

really handy for helping me figure out how best to talk to my friend and deal with my own preconceived notions and anger about the situation. not too in-depth, pretty basic, but super useful for the layperson. absolutely recommended.

Book was listed as "like new". It had been a library book, had the numbers on the spine. It had underlining in pen throughout the book. I would have picked another book had I known this.
