5.0 out of 5 stars Sculpting breakthrough!
In this newest sculpting book Maureen Carlson throughly explains and shows each step of the way how to create a realistic face. The "whys" of realism verses character are explored and shown. And the keys to seeing the differences in real people's faces are explored and explained. There are great sculpting instructions for hands, feet, shoes, bodies, costuming...

3.0 out of 5 stars Feedback
A great read to get to grips with some of the really practical steps and stages of this hobby - coupled with the other books I bought, I was glad I choose this as it was way down the scale and really where I ought to start since I am a complete novice. The easy to use instructions (for me especially) would be welcomed by some older children too - great ideas enclosed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking characters! ! !, May 23, 2002

This review is from: Family and Friends in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
I work with Fimo almost for six months - it's my hobby.
Last month I bought two books from "amazon" :
1."How to make clay characters"
2."Family and Friends in polymer clay".
They teach me how to do fascinating characters in so clearly ways.
I love those books because Maureen Carlson explanations are simply, clearly, amusing and accurate.
They can teach everyone how to make clay characters.
I find lots of full color pictures and detailed in those books that make this fun and easy to create clay characters.
The chapters about choosing the clay, gathering tools, basic techniques, and problems and solutions are very much comprehensive, and I wish I had those books when I first started to work with Fimo - because they would save me a lot of time and clay! ! !
I can't stop reading and doing the things in the book.
Everyone who see the things that I do with Fimo from those books can't believe that I did those characters, because they are so charming, adorable, exciting and breathtaking! ! !
I think that everyone who works with polymer clay should have those books.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST ever!, March 28, 2004

This review is from: Family and Friends in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
Maureen Carlson writes this great book with passion, skill, and humor. She starts the reader out with simple, step-by-step instructions that can't be better. I am a Polymer Clay Instructor, and I found this book to be invaluable! The one area with which I had trouble in sculpting polymer clay, the human form and face, are now no longer a mystery to me. I highly recommend this wonderful book to anyone even vaguely interested in dollmaking for fun and/or for profit.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK, November 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Family and Friends in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
This book was excellent! The instructions were written in such a manner - that it is simple enough for a beginner, and yet challenging enough for a seasoned sculptor. Every page is filled with excellent examples, techniques and exciting ideas.
A 'must have' for anyone really interested in learning to sculpt fun 'little people'!

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting and detailed, September 4, 2004

I found this book very interesting. This is not for the person who wants to make something "quickly". It involves a lot of patience but the end result is fantastic.
It was well worth buying!

This book is fantastic! This is one of my favorite books to work with. The book is full of color photos and lots of projects. It gives very detailed instructions with step-by-step pictures. If you enjoy sculpting whimsical figures or if you have someone you want to immortalize in clay, this is the book for you. This is a must have for any serious polymer clay crafter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with all the info. you'll need!, May 15, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Family and Friends in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
In this book, Maureen Carlson presents all of the information you will need to get started at making either figurines or art dolls . . . or both!

Not limited to friends and family, the book contains basic information you can work from to also create your own characters. The information can be overwhelming if you just page through the book, but the author's fun tone and excellent photography work hand in hand to create a text that truly welcomes you into what should become a fulfilling hobby.

I especially appreciate her focus on how everyday items probably already within your home will work just as well as the more expensive tools available in craft stores. So be sure NOT to stock up on supplies while waiting to receive the shipment of your book from Amazon!

My one "complaint" is that the author focuses so much on her more mature friends and family. It would be nice to have more examples and instruction relating to children and babies.
