5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for the whole Family!, October 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Family Garden (Audio CD)
John McCutcheon's 'Family Garden' is one of our family's favorite CDs. The song 'Little White Star' is about the Tooth Fairy and we have to listen to it each time there is a tooth lost at our house. 'Phobias' is probably the boy's favorite song. It is about all the things we are afraid of like "fear of school lunch...fake food-a-phobia!" When I first heard 'Baseball on the Block' it brought back happy childhood memories of playing ball with my family and friends. Each of the songs on this CD are catchy and before long we were all singing along. We think it is great for in the car, because the boys, ages 5 and 7, love it and so do my husband and I. We have to play and re-play the song, "If I Ran the World" for the boys. They sing along quite enthusiastically. 'Happy Adoption Day' is a tender, touching song about parents whose 'family was born' when they adopted a baby. The CD would be a great gift for someone who is or has adopted a baby or child. 'Dad's Got that Look' is nothing short of the ABSOLUTE TRUTH! It is about the look Dad gets when it's late at night and you're in the car and Dad turned left when he should have gone right and he won't stop for directions even though you are lost! The songs are upbeat, easy to listen to, and full of humor and fun. I find myself singing along on each song. This is a great addition to any family's CD collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best!, February 4, 1999

John McCutcheon has a unique ability to capture a child's thoughts...and put them into music that is easily listenable by all members of the family. My kids both love this album and so do we. We purchased it originally because it contains the only song about adoption I am aware of (Happy Adoption Day) but it so much more than that. Songs about baseball (I think every McCutcheon album contains at least one song about baseball) losing teeth, eating watermelon...With wonderful musicians behind him, coupled with excellent producing and arranging, this album is definitely one that will appeal to a wide range of musical tastes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "desert island" favorite, September 1, 2002

This review is from: Family Garden (Audio CD)
I just took delivery of my third copy of "Family Garden," having lost the previous two to car vandals. The break-ins were December 1999 and May 2002. The point of this post is to inform you that I've carried this CD with me for years; that's how I lost it twice.

It's one of my favorite albums, period. I have a significant John McCutcheon collection, but "Family Garden" touches me above all others. Here's the punch line: I am single, no kids. I'm also a huge fan of "What It's Like" so believe me, I get John McCutcheon on all fronts.

So...for what it's worth, I had this CD with me, and lost it, in 1999 and in 2002. But I have it again, with good reason. My favorite cuts are the title cut, "Baseball On The Block," "Happy Adoption Day," "Dad's Got That Look," "Is My Family," and well, it's all good. I hope you and your family enjoy it as much as I do.

This is one of our family's favorite CDs. My two-year-old especially loves the phobia song. The songs are all exceptionally well-written and we love McCutcheon's voice. If you're looking for music that you'll enjoy listening to WITH your children, this is the one!

We got this album after seen McCutcheon in concert. My husband and I both play it even when the kids aren't with us. My personal favorite is Baseball on the Block, which is also on his newest album-Sermon on the Mound- a full album of baseball songs. The whole family loves The Phobia Song, Watermelon, and Promised Land. Family Revival reminds me so much of my own relatives. We sent this album to a cousin who adopted a little girl because of Happy Adoption Day. If you ever get to see John in concert, don't pass it up. Watching him play the hammer dulcimer live is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adoption Day Song is Awesome, February 13, 2006
This review is from: Family Garden (Audio CD)
We were in an adoption support group and one of the couples bought each of us a copy of the book and the CD! It was one of the best gifts I've ever gotten. All the songs are great, but that one really fills my heart and my kids' too. My son also loves the 'baseball' song and my daughter the 'tooth fairy' song. We play it all the time. I highly recommend it as a gift for someone who is adopting a child.
